County Hall ( ga, Halla an Chontae, Tamhlacht) is a municipal building in Tallaght in the county of South Dublin, Ireland. History Following the implementation of the Local Government (Dublin) Act 1993, which created South Dublin County Council, the county council initially met in the Regional Technical College, Tallaght. The new building, which was designed by Gilroy McMahon, was purpose-built for the county council and completed in 1994. Local Government (Dublin) Act 1993
The Local Government (Dublin) Act 1993 was an Act passed by the Oireachtas. It abolished the County Dublin and awarded county status to: * Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown and established Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, * South Dublin and established South Dublin County Council and * Fingal and established Fingal County Council. These new administrative counties have all the powers and institutions of the traditional counties. Section 9 Part 1(a) states that on the establishment day (1 January 1994) the previous county of Dublin "shall cease to exist." Section 15 Part 2 dissolved the former Dún Laoghaire Corporation. The Bill had been proposed by the Minister for the Environment, Michael Smith. South Dublin County Council ( ga, Comhairle Contae Átha Cliath Theas) is the authority responsible for local government in the county of South Dublin, Ireland. It is one of three local authorities created by the Local Government (Dublin) Act 1993 to succeed the former Dublin County Council before its abolition on 1 January 1994 and one of four councils in County Dublin. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 40 elected members. The Institute of Technology Tallaght (also known as ITT or IT Tallaght) (Irish: ''Institiúid Teicneolaíochta, Tamhlacht)'' was a third-level institution in Tallaght, the largest suburb of Dublin, Ireland. Established in 1992, IT Tallaght offered degree and postgraduate courses as well as adult education courses. On 1 January 2019 it was dissolved and its operations merged into the new Technological University Dublin (TUD). Its campus is now the Tallaght Campus of TUD. History The institute was established as Tallaght Regional Technical College, in 1992, and was at the time the final new Regional Technical College opened in Ireland. It was built on lands donated for educational use to the Irish government by the Dominican Orders, St. Mary's Priory lands, in Tallaght.
