Cottonville is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, Iowa, United States. Geography Cottonville is located in Richland Township, at . History Cottonville was founded in Richland Township prior to the American Civil War, and was described by historian James Whitcomb Ellis as a "thriving little town" in that era. Cottonville's post office opened in 1850. The town of Cottonville had two general stores, two shoe shops, a blacksmith, a wagon shop, a grocery store, a post office, and a saloon. The community also boasted a Methodist church. In the early years, the church shared a preacher with nearby Lamotte to the north. Cottonville's population was 41 in 1902. The town began to decline with the coming of the railroad to nearby Lamotte, and by 1910, there was only one store and the blacksmith shop left in the Cottonville community. Area code 563 is a telephone area code for the east central and northeast corner of the state of Iowa, and includes most of the Iowa side of the Quad Cities. Area code 563 was split from area code 319 in 2001, becoming active on March 25, 2001, and finally becoming mandatory on December 2, 2001. Prior to the implementation of the code, there was debate over whether the 563 code should have been implemented as a split, or overlaid over the existing 319 code. Mobile phone providers were in favor of the overlay, as a split would have required ''en masse'' reprogramming of cell phones. La Motte is a small city in northern Jackson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 237 at the time of the 2020 census. History La Motte was planned in 1873, and the town voted to incorporate in 1879. It is named after Alexander La Motte, one of its founders.
