Cotton Gargrave
Sir Cotton Gargrave (1540–1588) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1571 and 1572. Early life Gargrave was the son of Sir Thomas Gargrave, High Sheriff of Yorkshire. He resided at Nostell Priory and at Kingsley, Yorkshire. Political career In the northern rebellion of 1569, Gargrave commanded a force of 200 men from the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was elected Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge in 1571 and 1572. In 1583 he was appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire and knighted in 1585. He was Custos Rotulorum of the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1584 to 1588. In his later years, he was forced to mortgage many of the extensive properties left him by his wealthy father. Family Gargrave married firstly Bridget Fairfax, daughter of Sir William Fairfax of Steeton, West Yorkshire, and High Sheriff of Yorkshire. Richard Gargrave
Sir Richard Gargrave (1575–1638) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1597 and 1609. Gargrave was the son of Sir Cotton Gargrave and his second wife Agnes Waterton, daughter of Thomas Waterton of Walton. He was at Peterhouse, Cambridge in about 1591 and at Inner Temple in 1591. He succeeded to the family estates worth £3,500 p.a when his elder half-brother Thomas Gargrave was executed for the murder of a servant boy. The estates consisted of eleven manors and other property. In 1597, he was elected Member of Parliament for Aldborough. He was a J.P. for the West Riding of Yorkshire and was knighted in 1603. From 1604 to 1605 he was High Sheriff of Yorkshire. He was elected MP for Yorkshire in 1606 when Francis Clifford was ennobled. Gargrave was given to drinking and gambling. John Savile, 1st Baron Savile of Pontefract (1556 – 31 August 1630) was an English politician. He was M.P. for Lincoln (1586), Sheriff of Lincolnshire (1590), knight of the shire for Yorkshire (1597, 1614, 1624 and 1626), ''custos rotulorum'' of West Riding of Yorkshire (ejected from office in 1615 but reappointed in 1626), privy councillor and comptroller of household (1627–1630). Mary Gargrave
Mary Gargrave (1576 – c. 1640) was a courtier to Anne of Denmark. Mary Gargrave was a daughter of Sir Cotton Gargrave (1540–1588) and his second wife Anne Waterton. They had houses at Kinsley, Hemsworth, and Nostell Priory, near Wakefield. King James knighted her brother Richard Gargrave at York on 17 April 1603. Although King James and later Anne of Denmark passed close to her home on their way to London from Scotland, there is no record of Gargrave meeting them at that time. Gargrave was appointed a maid of honour to the queen in 1603 or 1604 in time for her coronation. These positions at court were established by a household ordinance of 20 July 1603, with places for six maids of honour, a mother of the maids (Katherine Bridges), and four chamberers.
