John Savile, 1st Baron Savile Of Pomfret
John Savile, 1st Baron Savile of Pontefract (1556 – 31 August 1630) was an English politician. He was M.P. for Lincoln (1586), Sheriff of Lincolnshire (1590), knight of the shire for Yorkshire (1597, 1614, 1624 and 1626), ''custos rotulorum'' of West Riding of Yorkshire (ejected from office in 1615 but reappointed in 1626), privy councillor and comptroller of household (1627–1630). He was created Baron Savile in 1627. Early life John Savile was born in 1556, the son of Sir Robert Savile of Barkston, Lincolnshire (d. 1585), by his wife Anne Hussey (d. 1562), sister of John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, and widow of Sir Richard Thimelby. His father was the illegitimate son of Sir Henry Savile of Thornhill in the West Riding of Yorkshire and had served as sheriff of Lincolnshire in 1573. Knight of the shire ( la, milites comitatus) was the formal title for a member of parliament (MP) representing a county constituency in the British House of Commons, from its origins in the medieval Parliament of England until the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 ended the practice of each county (or '' shire'') forming a single constituency. The corresponding titles for other MPs were ''burgess'' in a borough constituency (or '' citizen'' if the borough had city status) and ''baron'' for a Cinque Ports constituency. Knights of the shire had more prestige than burgesses, and sitting burgesses often stood for election for the shire in the hope of increasing their standing in Parliament. The name "knight of the shire" originally implied that the representative had to be a knight, and the writ of election referred to a belted knight until the 19th century; but by the 14th century men who were not knights were commonly elected. Francis Clifford, 4th Earl Of Cumberland
Francis Clifford, 4th Earl of Cumberland (15594 January 1641) was a member of the Clifford family which held the seat of Skipton from 1310 to 1676. He was the second son of Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland and Anne Dacre and inherited his title and estates on the death of his brother George, who had willed them to him in place of his daughter Anne. A long lawsuit between them over the possession of the family estates was settled in 1617. He was elected Member of Parliament for Westmorland in 1584 and 1586 and for Yorkshire in 1604. He was appointed Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1600, constable of Knaresborough castle in 1604 and keeper of Carlisle castle in 1605. Edward Stanhope PC (24 September 1840 – 21 December 1893) was a British Conservative Party politician who was Secretary of State for War from 1887 to 1892. Background and education Born in London, Stanhope was the second son of Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope, by his wife Emily Harriet, daughter of General Sir Edward Kerrison, 1st Baronet. Arthur Stanhope, 6th Earl Stanhope was his elder brother and Philip Stanhope, 1st Baron Weardale his younger brother. He was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford. Stanhope studied law, being called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1865. William Fairfax (died 1597)
Sir William Fairfax (by 1531– 1 November 1597), of Gilling Castle and Walton, Yorkshire, was an English politician. He was the eldest son of Sir Nicholas Fairfax of Gilling, who he succeeded in 1571. He was knighted in 1560 and was a Justice of the Peace for Yorkshire from 1562 until his death. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Boroughbridge in 1558 and for Yorkshire in 1597. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1577–78 and a member of the Council in the North from 1577 to his death. He died in 1597 shortly after his election to Parliament. Sir George Savile, 1st Baronet of Thornhill (1551 – 12 November 1622), was an English politician and the lineal ancestor of the Marquesses of Halifax. He was born in 1551, the eldest son of Henry Savile and Joan Vernon. The Saviles were an old gentry family of Yorkshire, where many of them served as MPs or sheriffs. George Savile himself was elected to serve as Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge in 1586 and for Yorkshire in 1593. He succeeded to the estate of Thornhill after the death of his cousin, Edward Savile, in February 1602/3. He was created a Baronet in 1611 by James I of England and was High Sheriff of Yorkshire for 1613–1614. He married twice, with children by both wives. Thomas Fairfax, 1st Lord Fairfax of Cameron MP (1560 – 2 May 1640) was an English nobleman, soldier, diplomat, and politician, his title being in the Peerage of Scotland. As a young man he saw military service in the Low Countries, where he commanded a company of foot under Sir Francis Vere.
