Bernhard Cossmann
Bernhard Cossmann (17 May 1822 – 7 May 1910) was a German cellist. Born in Dessau, he first studied under Theodore Muller. During his life, he worked for the Grand Opera in Paris and became acquainted with Franz Liszt, with whom he went to Weimar. In 1866, Cossmann was appointed professor of cello studies at the Moscow Conservatory. However, in 1878, Cossmann helped found the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he occupied the post of teacher of cello. Cossmann was not only a frequent soloist and quartet member, but was also a composer. His works include three fantasias, '' Tell'', '' Euryanthe'', and multiple solo works for various instruments. In addition, he composed many etudes and studies for the cello, many of which are still used today. In 1890 Cossmann adapted Schubert's ''Erlkönig'' for solo cello for the exclusive use of his student Heinrich Kiefer. He wrote this in his score on ''Frankfurt 28. Nov. 1890 by B. Cossmann''. Maurice Cossmann
Maurice Cossmann, full name Alexandre Édouard Maurice Cossmann (18 September 1850 – 17 May 1924) was a French paleontologist and malacologist. Maurice Cossmann's father was an artist draughtsman and a talented lithographer. His early education was at Condorcet College in Paris and he later gained the Diploma of the Central School of Arts and Manufacturing in the same city. He was then employed by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord. Cossmann made all his career there, finally as Chief of the Engineering services (Ingénieur Chef des Services Techniques). Married and without a child, he loved to tell how the arrival of a small collection of fossils had led to his future studies of paleontology. Cossman specialised in the fossils of the Paleogene and Neogene periods. Paul Nikolaus Cossmann
Paul Nikolaus Cossmann (6 April 1869 – 19 October 1942) was a German journalist. Biography Born in Baden-Baden into a Jewish family, his parents were cellist Bernhard Cossmann and his wife Mathilde Hilb, the daughter of a Karlsruhe merchant. He never married. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1905, and subsequently was a devout practitioner of the faith. The elder Cossmann had been working in Moscow, but returned to his native country so that his son could be educated "as a German in Germany". While a gymnasium student in Frankfurt, he became a friend and devoted admirer of Hans Pfitzner; the two were the same age. He studied the natural sciences and philosophy, with a focus on Arthur Schopenhauer, and settled on a career in journalism. He launched '' Süddeutsche Monatshefte'' in Munich in 1903, leading it for the next three decades and soon establishing the review as one of the leading German cultural magazines of its day.
