Coronation Hill
Coronation Hill is a sandstone outcrop within Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia. The area had been briefly mined for uranium at El Sherana in the 1950s and in 1988 proposals for new mining of gold were made. When mining was proposed in 1988 the area existed as an excised zone of Kakadu National Park and was added to it after the proposal was defeated. Political importance The Australian Government established the Resource Assessment Commission to provide a report to inform best decision making about new mining in the area. Environmental, indigenous rights and social campaigns fought against allowing mining. Opposed environmental campaigns came from many organisations including the Kakadu Action Group founded by Lindsay Mollison, part of the Australian Conservation Foundation. Kakadu National Park
Kakadu National Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, southeast of Darwin. It is a World Heritage Site. Kakadu is also gazetted as a locality, covering the same area as the national park, with 313 people recorded living there in the 2016 Australian census. Water buffalo, which are now an environmental pest, were released in the area in the late 19th century, and missionaries established a mission at Oenpelli (present-day Gunbalanya) in 1925. A few pastoralists, crocodile hunters and wood cutters made a living at various times during the 20th century. The area was given protected status bit by bit from the 1970s onwards. El Sherana
El Sherana is an abandoned uranium mine in the Alligator Rivers, South Alligator River Valley of the Northern Territory, Australia. The deposit was discovered in 1954 by a United Uranium NL exploration team, led by Joe Fischer, with a ground radiometric survey. The site was named after the daughters of a team staff member, William 'Bluey' Halpin Kay - Elvira, Sherryl and Lana. El Sherana operated from 1958 to 1959 and El Sherana West from 1961 to 1964. El Sherana was the largest producer of high grade uranium ore (with minor gold and silver) amongst the mines along the South Alligator River Valley. It had underground and open-cut operations. Production from El Sherana was 38,437 long tons at a grade of 12.42 lb U3O8 per long ton (0.55% U3O8). Lindsay Mollison
Lindsay Clifford Mollison is a retired Consultant Physician in Gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases. He was the founding member of the Kakadu Action Group (KAG) that led a campaign to prevent mining in the Coronation Hill area of the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Early life and education Mollison was born at St George's Hospital in Kew, Victoria in 1956. His father was a professional wood turner and his mother a shop assistant. He was educated at Auburn Central School (now Auburn Primary School) and then Melbourne High School (where he was a prefect in his senior years at both). He graduated from school in 1974 with General and Special Exhibition Prizes in the Higher School Certificate examinations. He then attended the University of Melbourne from 1975 to 1981 graduating with MBBS in that year. The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is Australia's national environmental organisation, launched in 1965 in response to a proposal by the World Wide Fund for Nature for a more co-ordinated approach to sustainability. Bob Hawke
Robert James Lee Hawke (9 December 1929 – 16 May 2019) was an Australian politician and union organiser who served as the 23rd prime minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991, holding office as the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Previously he served as the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1969 to 1980 and president of the Labor Party national executive from 1973 to 1980. Jabiluka
Jabiluka is a pair of uranium deposits and mine development in the Northern Territory of Australia that was to have been built on land belonging to the Mirarr clan of Australian Aborigine, Aboriginal people. The mine site is surrounded by, but not part of, the World Heritage–listed Kakadu National Park. History Exploration on the site began in the late 1960s with Jabiluka 1 being discovered in 1971 and the much larger Jabiluka 2 discovered in 1973. The Jabiluka deposits were included in the group of uranium deposits that were the subject of the Russell Walter Fox, Fox Enquiry. As a result of this enquiry, the Jabiluka mining lease and two others were created along with Kakadu National Park.
