Corning High School (Iowa)
Southwest Valley High School is rural, public high school located in Corning, Iowa, United States. The school was renamed after Corning Community Schools and Villisca Community Schools entered into a whole-grade sharing agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Corning is responsible for the education of grades 9-12 and administration of all high school athletics. Villisca is home to the Southwest Valley Middle School and is responsible for the education of grades 6-8 and administration of all junior high athletics. The new moniker for the combined schools is Southwest Valley Timberwolves. The Corning district serves Corning and Carbon, while the Villisca district serves Villisca and Nodaway. Montgomery County is a county located in the southwestern area of the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,330. Its population has declined since a peak in 1900, since urbanization and decline of family farms. The county seat is Red Oak. The county was founded by European-American migrants from eastern areas in 1851. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while trying to capture Quebec City, Canada. Adams County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,704, making it Iowa's least-populous county. Its county seat is Corning. History Adams County was established by the state legislature in 1851 and named in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams, or his son, the sixth President, John Quincy Adams (sources differ). Carbon, Iowa
Carbon is a city in Douglas Township, Adams County, Iowa, United States. The population was 36 at the 2020 census. Note that other places in Iowa have been named Carbon: there was a Carbon Post Office in Davis County, six miles south of Ottumwa, that operated for less than a year in 1881. There was also a Carbon Post Office in Webster County, three miles south-east of Fort Dodge, that operated from 1870 to 1872. A post office on the latter location was known as Gypsum from 1902 to 1905. History Carbon is located on the Middle Nodaway River. This was home to the Pottawatomie, Oto and Iowa Indian tribes, until the treaty of 1851 forced their removal to Kansas or Indian Territory, now known as Oklahoma.
