Corner Artists Association
The Corner painters in Denmark first came together in 1932 when they decided to hold an exhibition in a meeting hall inside an office building on the corner of Vester Voldgade and Studiestræde in the centre of Copenhagen. The group was soon referred to simply as Corner. Among its earlier members were Karl Bovin, Victor Brockdorff, Povl Christensen, Kaj Ejstrup, Lauritz Hartz, Alfred Simonsen, Viggo Rørup and Erik Raadal. Today, with its 49 members, Retrieved 22 March 2016. it is the second largest artists association in Denmark. Regular exhibitions are still held, attracting thousands of visitors. The artists themselves are made up of painters, sculptors, photographers and musicians. They meet regularly and arrange annual exhibitions which attract large numbers of visitors. Vester Voldgade
Vester Voldgade ( lit. "West Rampart Street") is a street in Copenhagen, Denmark which runs from Jarmers Plads to the waterfront between Frederiksholms Kanal and Langebro, passing the City Hall Square on the way. Together with Nørre Voldgade and Øster Voldgade it forms a traffic artery which arches around the Zealand side of central Copenhagen all the way to Kastellet (at Oslo Plads on the coast north of the city centre. The three streets follow the course of Copenhagen's long gone Bastioned Fortification Ring and thus marks the transition between the Old Town and the new neighbourhoods that developed after the fortifications were removed in the second half of the 19th century. Studiestræde
Studiestræde is a street in central Copenhagen, Denmark, running from Bispetorv on Nørregade in the northeast to Axeltorv in the southwest. The oldest section of the street, between Nørregade and Vester Voldgade, is part of Copenhagen's Latin Quarter and is home to many small shops, galleries and cafés. Most of the buildings date from the years after the Copenhagen Fire of 1795. The rest of the street dates from an extension in the second half of the 19th century. It is bisected by H. C. Andersens Boulevard and is home to the music venue Pumpehuset. History Copenhagen 's second Town Hall was located at the beginning of the street which was then called Rådhusstræde ("Town Hall Alley"). Karl Bovin
Karl (Kalle) Christian Bovin (1907–1985) was a Danish painter whose work focused on landscapes of Odsherred, a region in the north-west of Zealand. In the 1930s, he became a central member in the Odsherred Painters artists' colony and helped to found the Corner artists association. Biography Bovin was born in Frederikshavn, as the eldest son of a stone mason. From an early age, he was interested in art. In the 1920s, he cycled to the artists paradise Skagen in the north of Jutland to show his early works to Anna and Michael Ancher. At their encouragement, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1928 to 1931, where he studied under Sigurd Wandel and Aksel Jørgensen. During his time at school, he associated with a group of constructivists who relied on intuition and observation, but eventually expressed dissatisfaction with their approach to art. Victor Brockdorff
Arthur Victor Schack von Brockdorff, generally known as Victor Brockdorff, (October 11, 1911 – February 25, 1992) was a Danish painter who joined the artists' colony known as the Odsherred Painters in Northwestern Zealand in the early 1930s. He was a cofounder of the Corner painters, Corner Artists' Association. Biography The son of a shipmaster, Brockdorff was born in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen. After studying privately under Ernst Zeuthen and Olivia Holm Møller from 1926 to 1929, he studied graphic art under Aksel Jørgensen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1931–34). He debuted at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling (autumn exhibition) at Den Frie Udstilling, Den Frie in 1930, and was a co-founder of the Corner Exhibition in 1932 where he frequently exhibited. Povl Christensen
Povl Christensen (2 June 1909 – 9 July 1977) was a Danish painter and illustrator who, in the early 1930s, joined the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. He is however primarily remembered as a highly proficient graphic artist, not only for his woodcuts and engravings but for his contributions to overall book design. Early life Born in Copenhagen, Christensen was the son of a wholesaler. After attending Copenhagen's Technical School, he entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, first studying painting under Ejnar Nielsen and Aksel Jørgensen (1926–28) and then graphic arts, also under Jørgensen (1930–38), including woodcuts, etching and lithography. While at the Academy, he demonstrated expertise in both figure painting and landscapes. Kaj Ejstrup
Kaj Ejstrup (20 February 1902 – 23 November 1956) was a Danish artist, illustrator and sculptor. Above all, he is remembered for the landscapes he painted in the north west of Zealand as a member of the artists' colony known as the Odsherred Painters. In 1932, he was one of the founding members of the Corner artists association. Much of his work can be seen at Odsherreds Museum of Art. Biography The adopted son of a customs official, Ejstrup was brought up in Buddinge, north of Copenhagen. A self-taught painter, he was unsuccessful in gaining admission to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts but learnt wood engraving under Aksel Jørgensen in various periods from 1931 to 1937. He debuted in 1926 at the Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling (Artists' Autumn Exhibition) and was a founding member of the Corner exhibition in 1932. Lauritz Hartz
Lauritz Berg Hartz (27 December 1903 – 22 September 1987) was a Danish artist, considered to be one of the country's finest colourists. Biography Born in Frederiksberg, Hartz was first instructed in art at the age of 19 by the German Expressionist painter, Fritz Urschbach who aroused his interest in naturalism. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Sigurd Wandel and Aksel Jørgensen where he quickly gained a reputation as a talented artist. Alfred Simonsen
Alfred Simonsen (16 December 1906 – 12 April 1935) was a Danish painter who in the early 1930s became associated with the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. When he died at the early age of 27, he had only completed about 30 paintings and a few sketches. Biography The son of a gardener, Simonsen was born in Kølstrup, a little village near Kerteminde on the Danish island of Funen. He was given painting lessons by an Odense theatre painter from about 1920. From 1926 to 1932, he studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Ejnar Nielsen and Aksel Jørgensen. While there, he developed a friendship with Erik Raadal and Karl Bovin. His association with Ernst Syberg also brought him into contact with the Funen Painters, encouraging to paint scenes of the Funen countryside, especially around Korup and Svanninge. Viggo Rørup
Viggo Julius Rørup (12 September 1903 – 14 January 1971) was a Danish artist who in the early 1930s joined the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. Biography Born in Kalundborg, Rørup studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Ejnar Nielsen and Sigurd Wandel, graduating in 1930. He debuted in 1928 at the ''Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling'' (Artists' Autumn Exhibition). In 1927, he moved into a house in Kårup Bakker in Odsherred as one of the first to join Karl Bovin and Kaj Ejstrup in the group of artists known as the Odsherred Painters. In 1937, he married the artist Ellen Krause who also became a member of the artists' colony. Until 1940, he was mainly a figure painter but he then extended his scope to landscapes.
