Cornelius Ambrose Logan
Cornelius Ambrose Logan (August 24, 1832 – January 30, 1899) was an American physician, writer, and diplomat, best known for his two terms as United States Ambassador to Chile (1873-6 and 1882-5) during difficult times. Logan spent his early life in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1849 he began to study medicine with Dr. John T. Shotwell; in 1850 he began instruction under Dr. R. D. Mussey, then serving as president of the American Medical Association. He graduated from Miami Medical College (now part of the University of Cincinnati) in 1853. In 1856 he moved to Kansas to practice medicine and was appointed chairman of the State Board of Medical Examiners at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was elected to the first city council of the new city of Atchison in 1858. After the Civil War Logan published works on a variety of subjects - sanitary conditions, climatology, and infectious disease. Cornelius Ambrosius Logan
Cornelius Ambrosius Logan (May 4, 1806 – February 23, 1853) was an American actor, playwright, and journalist who was father to a famous family of actresses and writers. Biography Born in Baltimore to Irish immigrant parents, Logan was educated for the Catholic priesthood at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, but then entered a shipping house, where his work led him to travel to Europe several times. He next became a journalist, and after working as a drama critic began to write plays and act himself. He moved to Cincinnati with his growing family in 1840 where he operated the "National Theater". He later operated theaters in other cities and traveled with his oldest daughter Eliza, playing comic "yankee" roles. He also wrote short stories, poetry, notably a well-regarded ''Ode to the Mississippi'', and a defence of the theater against criticism from the pulpit. William Randall Roberts
William Randall Roberts (February 6, 1830 – August 9, 1897) was a Fenian Brotherhood member, United States Representative from New York (1871–1875), and a United States Ambassador to Chile. Roberts, an Irish immigrant who became a wealthy businessman, rose quickly to a position of major influence amongst the Fenian Brotherhood before eventually taking leadership. Under his direction, the Fenians in America moved to use Irish-American veterans of the American Civil War to invade Canada in the hopes that they could leverage this against the British Empire to negotiate for an Independent Irish Republic. After the first attempt to invade Canada was not successful, Roberts resigned from the leadership of the Fenians and began to transition into American politics. Judson Kilpatrick
Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (January 14, 1836 – December 4, 1881) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War, achieving the rank of brevet major general. He was later the United States Minister to Chile and an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives. Joseph Pomeroy Root (April 23, 1826 – July 20, 1885) was an American doctor, politician, and leader of the Kansas Free Staters. A descendant of an old New England family, Root was the great-grandson of Revolutionary War General Seth Pomeroy. He graduated from the Berkshire Medical College in Pittsfield and practiced medicine in New Hartford, Connecticut for five years. In 1855 he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, as a Whig. After his term, he joined an armed party of abolitionist settlers who ended up settling in Waubansee, Kansas. After Root was briefly a prisoner of pro-slavery settlers, he devoted himself to the Free State cause, ultimately becoming the chairman of the free-state executive committee. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg (1814-1889) was an American painter noted for his Orientalist work, an art historian and art collector. Life and career Kellogg was born in Manlius Square, New York in 1814. He painted primarily portraits, figures and landscapes. At one time he worked as a courier on behalf of the United States Department of State. As a courier he traveled to Europe. Kellogg also was a land surveyor in Texas. He also was an art historian and an art collector. His personal art collection included works attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. He died in Toledo, Ohio in 1889. His archives are held in the collections of the University of Texas at Austin and the Indiana Historical Society. Celia Logan (December 17, 1837 – June 18, 1904) was an American actress, playwright, and writer, and a member of the Logan family of actors and writers. She became a correspondent of American journals and wrote for magazines. During the American Civil War, she resided in Milan, Italy, translating the war news for newspapers. Afterwards she settled in Washington D.C., where she became associate editor of ''The Capital''. She wrote several dramas, including ''An American Marriage''.
