Miner Kilbourne Kellogg
Miner Kilbourne Kellogg (1814-1889) was an American painter noted for his Orientalist work, an art historian and art collector. Life and career Kellogg was born in Manlius Square, New York in 1814. He painted primarily portraits, figures and landscapes. At one time he worked as a courier on behalf of the United States Department of State. As a courier he traveled to Europe. Kellogg also was a land surveyor in Texas. He also was an art historian and an art collector. His personal art collection included works attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. He died in Toledo, Ohio in 1889. His archives are held in the collections of the University of Texas at Austin and the Indiana Historical Society. Relief
Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces are bonded to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb ''relevo'', to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. The approach requires a lot of chiselling away of the background, which takes a long time. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, particularly in stone. Indiana Historical Society
The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) is one of the United States' oldest and largest historical societies and describes itself as "Indiana's Storyteller". It is housed in the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center at 450 West Ohio Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, in The Canal and White River State Park Cultural District, neighboring the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art.
