Cora Mud Turtle
The Cora mud turtle (''Kinosternon cora'') is a species of mud turtle endemic to western Mexico. Description The Cora mud turtle is a sister species of the Vallarta mud turtle (''Kinosternon vogti''), with which it shares most morphological characteristics. It is distinguished from other ''Kinosternon'' species (except ''K. vogti'') in having a reduced and weakly movable plastron, and a comparatively wider carapace. The turtle differs from ''K. vogti'' mainly in being larger, darker in colour, and having shell scutes of different shapes and dimensions. ''Kinosternon'' is a genus of small aquatic turtles from the Americas known commonly as mud turtles. Geographic range They are found in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. The greatest species richness is in Mexico, and only three species ('' K. dunni'', '' K. leucostomum'', and '' K. scorpioides'') are found in South America. Description They are very similar to the musk turtles, but generally smaller in size, and their carapaces are not as highly domed. Vallarta Mud Turtle
The Vallarta mud turtle (''Kinosternon vogti'') is a recently identified species of Kinosternon, mud turtle in the family (biology), family Kinosternidae. While formerly considered conspecific with the Jalisco mud turtle, further studies indicated that it was a separate species. It can be identified by a combination of the number of plastron and carapace scutes, body size, and the distinctive yellow rostral shield in males. It is endemic to Mexico, Mexican state of Jalisco. It is only known from a few human-created or human-affected habitats (such as small streams and ponds) found around Puerto Vallarta. It is one of only 3 species in ''Kinosternon'' known to inhabit the lowlands of the Central Pacific region in Mexico. Natural populations are not currently known, and the current habitats the species is known from have all been damaged by Urban sprawl, urban growth. Turtles are an order of reptiles known as Testudines, characterized by a special shell developed mainly from their ribs. Modern turtles are divided into two major groups, the Pleurodira (side necked turtles) and Cryptodira (hidden necked turtles), which differ in the way the head retracts. There are 360 living and recently extinct species of turtles, including land-dwelling tortoises and freshwater terrapins. They are found on most continents, some islands and, in the case of sea turtles, much of the ocean.
