Cora (name)
Cora is a given name, most commonly derived from the Ancient Greek Κόρη (Kórē), an epithet of the Greek goddess Persephone. Alternatively, but rarely, it may be rooted in the Gaelic ''cora'', the comparative of ''cóir'', meaning just, honest, virtuous or good. Variant forms of this name include Kora and Korra. History The current name Cora may be derived from a variety of origins. Its most prominent antecedents, however, lie in ancient Greece. Ancient Greece The Greek word κόρη (korē) can mean girl, maiden or daughter. In the latter sense it came to be an alternate name given to Persephone to denote her being the daughter of Demeter, who accordingly carries the epithet Μήτηρ (Mētēr), mother. Κόρη was used when addressing Persephone not as queen of the underworld, but as vegetation goddess. Today's pronunciation of Cora is foreshadowed in some Greek dialects. In both Doric and Aeolic κόρη becomes κόρα (kora), in Doric it also appears as κώρ ...

Cora (fungus)
''Cora'' is a large genus of basidiolichens in the family Hygrophoraceae. Modern molecular phylogenetics research has revealed a rich biodiversity in this largely tropical genus. Taxonomy ''Cora'' was originally circumscribed by the Swedish "Father of Mycology", Elias Magnus Fries, in 1825. He included a single species, until then known as ''Thelephora pavonia'' . Until relatively recently, ''Cora'' was thought to contain one species, or was placed into synonymy with ''Dictyonema''. ''Cora'' was recognized as an independent genus separate from ''Dictyonema'' in 2013. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using DNA barcoding of the internal transcribed spacer region has revealed the existence of almost 200 species in the genus, and about 450 species are predicted to exist. Habitat and distribution Mexico and (at least formerly) Florida are the northernmost distribution points for the genus ''Cora'', while its southernmost locale is southern Chile. It has its highest biodiversity in t ...

Cora, Wyoming
Cora is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sublette County, Wyoming. The population was 142 at the 2010 census. History Cora may have been named after Cora House, a cowgirl who lived in the area. In the early 20th century, the town post office was moved to its current site from a ranch one mile to the east. Dogsleds were once used to make winter deliveries to residents who lived in the Cora area and the rest of the Upper Green River valley. In 2011, the U.S. Postal Service considered closing the Cora post office for budgetary reasons. Residents of Cora protested and wrote letters to the USPS requesting that the post office remain open because it serves as a gathering place for the community. As of 2020, the post office is still open. John Perry Barlow, lyricist for the Grateful Dead, grew up in Cora on his family's homestead, the Bar Cross Ranch. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 76 people, 38 households, and 25 families residing in the CDP. The population de ...
