Coonawarra is a south-eastern suburb in the city of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. Fong Lim is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. The district is named after Alec Fong Lim, Lord Mayor of Darwin from 1984 to 1990. Northern Immigration Detention Centre
Northern Immigration Detention Centre is a facility operated by the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection to house people and process their applications concerning immigration detention. It is located at Coonawarra, an outer Darwin suburb and is described as primarily accommodating illegal foreign fishers. It has an operating capacity of 554 people. In 2009, it was managed by G4S, a private company, but this is no longer the case. On 30 August 2010 100 detainees staged a riot and climbed on the roofs of buildings in the facility. The following day 90 Afghan inmates escaped and staged a peaceful protest along the side of the Stuart Highway nearby. HMAS Coonawarra
HMAS ''Coonawarra'' is a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base located in Darwin, Northern Territory, and is home to nine fleet units of the RAN. The current commander is Captain Moses Raudino, ADC, RAN. History During World War I, Port Darwin had been used as a coaling station for naval ships, but it was not considered a naval base. Later, during the 1930s, the RAN constructed oil fuel tanks on the harbour front, holding about of oil. All were destroyed in the Japanese attack on Darwin on 19 February 1942. The first naval depot at Darwin was established in January 1935. This was a naval reserve depot, commanded by Lieutenant Commander H.P. Jarrett.
