With an estimated population of 147,255 as of 2019, the city contains the majority of the residents of the sparsely populated Northern Territory. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. The City covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 84,613 people. History The first Town and District Council was formed in 1874. The Darwin Town Council was created in 1915. From 1921 the five member Council had been elected on a ratepayer's franchise. In 1930 the Mayor and Councillors resigned in protest against the re-introduction of adult suffrage. The Northern Territory Rates Act Area, formerly the Darwin Rates Act Area, is an unincorporated area in the Northern Territory of Australia located in Darwin and where municipal services are provided by the Northern Territory Government. It is an industrial area where rates revenue goes directly to the Northern Territory Government. It consists the localities of East Arm, Tivendale and Wishart, and parts of the localities of Berrimah, Charles Darwin and Hidden Valley. Fong Lim is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. The district is named after Alec Fong Lim, Lord Mayor of Darwin from 1984 to 1990.
