Consortium Of Humanitarian Agencies
The Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies (CHA) was established in Sri Lanka in April 1997 to serve a membership and has since become a national service provider in the non-profit sector. CHA's field offices are located in 12 districts in the North, South and East in Sri Lanka. In addition its post-tsunami information management centres are located in all affected districts of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. General profile CHA represents the resources and work of the humanitarian sector in Sri Lanka. CHA's membership supports and intervenes in the sector across all parts of the country. Tsunami
A tsunami ( ; from ja, 津波, lit=harbour wave, ) is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake. 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake And Tsunami
An earthquake and a tsunami, known as the Boxing Day Tsunami and, by the scientific community, the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, occurred at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7) on 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It was an undersea megathrust earthquake that registered a magnitude of 9.1–9.3 , reaching a Mercalli intensity up to IX in certain areas. The earthquake was caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma Plate and the Indian Plate. A series of massive tsunami waves grew up to high once heading inland, after being created by the underwater seismic activity offshore. Jeevan Thiagarajah ( ta, ஜீவன் தியாகராஜா) is a Sri Lankan Tamil civil servant, human rights activist, social activist who is also the current Governor of the Northern Province. Career He served as the chairman of the Institute for Human Rights, a Sri Lankan NGO and also worked as the Executive Director of the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies. Jeevan Thiagarajah has worked in the NGO sector in Sri Lanka since 1984, holding executive positions in several humanitarian and human rights organizations. In December 2020, he was appointed as the member of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka.
