Conotton Creek Trail
The Conotton Creek Trail is a rail trail in Ohio, running from Bowerston to Jewett in northern Harrison County. The trail spains 11.2 miles one way or 22.4 miles round trip. The paved multi-use trail is suitable for biking, unicycling, roller-blading, wheel chairing, jogging, and walking. It features six bridges, two of which (in Scio and Jewett) are covered. The trail has 40 birdhouses to attract tree swallows and bluebirds. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy chose it as its "Trail of the Month" for March 2002. Bowerston is a village in Harrison County, Ohio, United States. The population was 398 at the 2010 census. History The village of Bowerston was settled in the early 19th century by Barnhard Bower and his brother John. When they first moved to the area, two mills were already built on the south side of Conotton Creek. One mill was a sawmill, the other a gristmill, and in 1804, the Bower brothers began to rebuild the mills. In 1816, the settlement called Bower's Mills was laid out and later it was called Bowersville and finally Bowerston. Bowerston was platted by David Bower, Henry Hoover, and Nathaniel Bower on August 21, 1851 and was filed in court August 2, 1852. The village was incorporated April 2, 1883. Jewett is a village in Harrison County, Ohio, United States. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. History Jewett was originally called Fairview, and under the latter name was platted in 1851. The present name is for T. M. Jewett, a railroad official. Jewett was the original home of the Jewett Car Company, a street car manufacturer, from 1894 until 1904.
