Connie Osterman
Constance Elaine "Connie" Osterman (born June 23, 1936) is a former politician from Alberta, Canada. She served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1979 to 1992 as a member of the Progressive Conservative caucus in government. She served as a cabinet minister in the governments of Premier Peter Lougheed and Don Getty from 1982 to 1989. Political career Osterman first ran for a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the 1979 general election, as the Progressive Conservative candidate in the electoral district of Three Hills; she defeated three other candidates by a large margin. In the 1982 Alberta general election Osterman won nearly quadruple the votes of her two opponents to hold her seat. She was then appointed Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs by Premier Peter Lougheed. Osterman was only the fifth woman in Alberta political history to be appointed to the provincial cabinet. Acme, Alberta
Acme is a village in south-central Alberta, Canada. It is located northeast of Calgary. It was the first village to be incorporated in Kneehill County. The name ''Acme'' is derived from the village's railway heritage. When the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the area in 1909, the village's station became the most northernly stop on the company's network. The moniker ''Acme'' (of Greek origin, meaning 'the highest point') was thus applied to the community by CPR surveyors of the day. The first train arrived July 7, 1910, and the village was incorporated that day as well. 1979 Alberta General Election
The 1979 Alberta general election was held on March 14, 1979, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, which had been expanded to 79 seats. The Progressive Conservative Party of Peter Lougheed won its third consecutive term in government. During the campaign, some Progressive Conservatives spoke of winning "79 in '79", i.e., all 79 seats in the legislature. This harkened back to Social Credit's unofficial slogan from the 1963 election, "63 in '63". The Tories came up short of this goal, and actually lost over five percentage points of the popular vote. Nonetheless, they still won an overwhelming majority, with 74 seats. Social Credit held on to the four seats they had won in the 1975 election, and formed the official opposition in the legislature. 1989 Alberta General Election
The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Together those two parties received 55 percent of the vote to the Conservative's 44 percent. The Conservatives sustained a net loss of only two seats in the legislature. 1982 Alberta General Election
The 1982 Alberta general election was held on November 2, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Less than four years had passed since the Progressive Conservatives won their landslide victory in 1979. Premier Peter Lougheed decided to call a snap election to catch fledgling new parties off guard, most notably the separatist Western Canada Concept which was capitalizing on anger over Lougheed's perceived weakness in dealings with the federal government, in particular his acceptance of the hugely unpopular National Energy Program. The WCC's Gordon Kesler had won a by-election earlier in the year, and Lougheed decided that it would be wise to stage a showdown with the WCC sooner rather than later.
