Connecticut Route 354
Route 354 is a state highway in eastern Connecticut running from Colchester to Salem. Route description Route 354 begins as Parum Road at an intersection with Route 85 in the town center of Colchester and heads southeast. It intersects Route 2 after 0.4 with a partial interchangeat Exit 21. Route 354 continues southeast, becoming Deep River Road as it heads towards the town of Salem. In Salem, the road becomes Old Colchester Road and continues southeast to end at an intersection with Route 82 at the south side of Gardner Lake. History Route 354 was commissioned from SR 654 in 1963 and has had no significant changes since. SR 654 itself first became a state road in 1955. A proposal to extend it to Route 32 in Montville was rejected in 1973. Colchester is a New England town, town in New London County, Connecticut, New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 15,555 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. In 2010 Colchester became the first town in Connecticut, and the 36th in the country, to be certified with the National Wildlife Federation as a Community Wildlife Habitat. Salem is a town in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 4,213 at the 2020 census. History Pre-incorporation The area was originally inhabited by the Mohegan people. The first settlement of European origin in present-day Salem (then part of the town of Montville) was deeded in 1664. The settlers were of English origin. In the early 18th century, more settlements appeared in what was then Colchester. During this time period, the area was called "Paugwonk". The small neighborhood around the Gardner Lake Firehouse on Route 354 is sometimes still referred to by that name. Because of the remote location of these settlements and the considerable distance to churches, the people petitioned the Connecticut General Court for a new parish in 1725. It was named New Salem Parish, in honor of Colonel Samuel Browne, the largest landowner at the time, who was from Salem, Massachusetts. Route 85 is a north–south state highway in the east-central portion of the U.S. state of Connecticut linking the city of New London to the town of Bolton. The section of Route 85 between Route 82 in Salem and Interstate 95 (I-95) in Waterford is a major thoroughfare that serves traffic between the Hartford and New London areas. This section travels through what is known as the '' Route 11 Corridor'', named for the unfinished expressway that was to run parallel to Route 85 in this area. Route 82 is an east–west state highway in Connecticut running for from Route 9 in Chester to Route 2 and 32 in Norwich. Route description Route 82 begins at a trumpet intersection with Route 9 at exit 7 in Chester and heads northeast into Haddam as a super two to an intersection with Route 154. The two routes briefly overlap before Route 82 continues east to the East Haddam Bridge over the Connecticut River, entering East Haddam near Goodspeed Opera House. Montville is a town in New London County, Connecticut in the United States. The population was 18,387 at the 2020 census. The villages of Chesterfield, Mohegan, Oakdale, and Uncasville are located within the town; the latter two have their own ZIP Codes. Town residents often identify with these villages more than the Town of Montville as a whole. The Mohegan Sun casino resort is located in the village of Uncasville.
