Conmee, Ontario
Conmee is a township (Canada), township in the Canada, Canadian province of Ontario, located within the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Thunder Bay District. The township was named after James Conmee (October 13, 1848 – July 23, 1913 - an Ontario businessman and political figure) and is part of the city of Thunder Bay's Census Metropolitan Area. Its main named settlements were the communities of Mokomon and Hume, now historical footnotes in Conmee's development. Conmee Township was home to a Summer solstice, Summer Solstice festival during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Although the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere officially occurs around the 21st of June, Conmee's festival would take place over the "Victoria Day" long weekend, at a location colloquially known as "Mokomon's Farm", where people would set up tents in the fields and meadows, local folk and rock music bands would provide entertainment, and local crafts persons would display their art. James Conmee
James Conmee (October 13, 1848 – July 23, 1913) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Algoma West from 1885 to 1902 and Port Arthur and Rainy River from 1902 to 1904 in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and Thunder Bay and Rainy River in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1911 as a Liberal member. Biography He was born in Sydenham Township, Canada West in 1848, the son of Irish immigrants Matthew Conmee and Rosanna O'Shaughnessey, the youngest of four children (three boys, one girl). Although his education was rudimentary and better educated political enemies mocked his grammatical skills, he became over time a skilled and formidable debater. James was underage when he and his brother John sought adventure and joined the 8th New York Cavalry Regiment 21 March 1865 at Rochester, New York. John Conmee
John Stephen Conmee SJ (25 December 1847 – 1910) was an Irish Jesuit educator. He was born in County Roscommon into a wealthy farming family and was educated at Castleknock College and Clongowes Wood College. He influenced his student James Joyce and became a character in Joyce's novels ''A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man'' and ''Ulysses''. He was a rector of Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare and prefect of studies at Belvedere College. Joyce was one of his students at Clongowes in 1888. Conmee was influential in granting Joyce and his brothers a scholarship place at Belvedere College, County Dublin in 1893 when Joyce's family collapsed into poverty. He appears under his own name in both ''Portrait'' and ''Ulysses''. Margot Norris analyzed Conmee's existence in some of Joyce's writing.
