Conestogo, Ontario
Conestogo is a community in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in the township of Woolwich in Waterloo Region. The population in 2016 was 1,270. The community is located at the junction of the Grand and Conestogo Rivers. Conestogo is a terminus of the Avon Trail. History The vicinity of present day Conestogo was first settled in 1820s, on the Grand and Conestogo Rivers. The first settlers were predominantly Mennonites who had emigrated from Pennsylvania, settling on land laid out by David Musselman and Charles Hendry. They were followed by people of German and British background. The first mill in Woolwich Township was built in Conestogo in 1846 by David Musselman powered by the Conestogo River. Two large flax mills were soon built. The Post Office was established in 1849 by Charles Hendry. Conestogo River
The Conestogo River is a river in Waterloo Region and Wellington County in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The river was named by Mennonite settlers after the Conestoga River in Pennsylvania. In the 1800s there were several different spellings of the name of the river and of the nearby settlement of Conestogo, Ontario but the name ending in "o" became official. It is in the Lake Erie Basin and joins the Grand River as a right tributary at the community of Conestogo. A dam built on the river for flood control formed Conestogo Lake, which covers an area of about . A conservation area operated by the Grand River Conservation Authority is located on this lake. Walter Hachborn
Walter Hachborn, (July 24, 1921 – December 16, 2016) was a Canadian businessman and co-founder, with two others, of Home Hardware, a Canadian home improvement and construction retailer which supplies contractors and individual retail consumers. Early life Born in Conestogo, Ontario, he lived in St. Jacobs, Ontario, most of his life. Career He started working in the hardware industry in 1938 and created Home Hardware in 1964 with two partners, Henry Sittler and Arthur Zilliax. He had been its president since the beginning seeing the company grow from 122 dealers to over 1100 stores and annual sales of over $6 billion. He retired from day-to-day operations in 1988 and retained the title of President Emeritus until 2010 with more than 75 years in the hardware industry. Leeanna Pendergast
Leeanna Pendergast (born ) is a Canadian former politician. She was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2007 to 2011, representing the riding of Kitchener—Conestoga. Background Pendergast was born in Kitchener, Ontario in 1962. She obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Waterloo. She has also studied at the University of Toronto and at Oxford University in England, receiving numerous degrees including a MA, BEd and MEd. She worked at numerous high schools in the region, serving as the vice-principal of four schools and as an education consultant for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. Pendergast has helped develop various programs for youth in Kitchener, including the Safe Schools Initiative and the Breakfast Program for Needy Students. James Livingston (Canadian Politician)
James Livingston (November 29, 1838April 15, 1920) was an Ontario businessman and politician. He represented Waterloo South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1879 to 1882 and in the House of Commons of Canada from 1882 to 1900 as a Liberal member. Life and career He was born in East Kilbride, Scotland in 1838, the son of a weaver. He worked at weaving as a youth and then came to Perth County, Canada West in 1856. A year later, Livingston moved to Conestogo in Waterloo County where he worked for flax growers, soon afterwards becoming manager. In 1865, he went into business with his brother growing flax at Wellesley. The company expanded into the production of linseed oil at Baden, also opening a foundry and general store. William Daum Euler
William Daum Euler, (July 10, 1875 – July 15, 1961) was a Canadian parliamentarian. Euler was born in Conestogo, Ontario, the son of Henry Euler and Catherine Daum. He attended Berlin High School between the years of 1891 and 1893. He then taught in Suddaby Public School and later founded the Euler Business College. Euler married Jean Howd. He was mayor of Berlin, Ontario (now Kitchener) from 1914 to 1917. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1917 representing the riding of Waterloo North, Ontario. A Liberal, he held three cabinet positions: Minister of Customs and Excise (1926 to 1927), Minister of National Revenue (1927 to 1930), and Minister of Trade and Commerce (1935 to 1940). He served until 1940, when he was appointed to the Senate representing the senatorial division of Waterloo, Ontario. He died in office in 1961 in Kitchener. 2021 Canadian Census
The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016. Planning Consultation on census program content was from September 11 to December 8, 2017. The census was conducted by Statistics Canada, and was contactless as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. The agency had considered delaying the census until 2022. About 900 supervisors and 31,000 field enumerators were hired to conduct the door-to-door survey of individuals and households who had not completed the census questionnaire by late May or early June.
