Area – International POPular Group, most commonly known as Area or AreA, is an Italian progressive rock, jazz fusion, electronic, experimental group formed in 1972 by singer Demetrio Stratos and drummer Giulio Capiozzo. They are considered one of the most respected, innovative and important bands of the blooming 1970s Italian progressive rock scene. Jazz Fusion
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and jazz improvisation, improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Others use elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures, or melodies with counter-melodies. ''Parigi-Lisbona'' is a live album by Italian jazz fusion band Area, released in 1996 and recorded in 1976 in Paris and Lisbon, while the band was supporting their third album ''Crac!''. In the Paris section of the album, Demetrio Stratos announces the songs in French and sings "La Mela di Odessa" as "La Pomme de Odessa". Just like the other phostmous release " Concerto Teatro Uomo", "Parigi-Lisbona" received criticism due to the sound quality of the recordings, and because some tracks contain edits. This album in 2002 was repackaged with other phostomous live album ''Concerto Teatro Uomo'' on the boxset ''Live Concerts Box''. ''Maledetti (Maudits)'' is the fifth album of the jazz fusion band Area and was released in 1976. It can be considered a concept album: during the 20th century, an imaginary bank in which history is stored, loses data from the 15th century ("Evaporazione"), causing people forgetting how to govern the world. Some new hypothesis are formulated: power to old people (''"Gerontocrazia"''), power to women (''"SCUM"'', which uses as lyrics a reading of a writing by Valerie Solanas, the chief of the feminist party SCUM, which stands for "Society for Cutting Up Men"), and power to children (''"Giro, giro, tondo"'' and ''"Caos (parte seconda)"''). ''Are(A)zione'' is the fourth album of the Jazz fusion band Area. It is Area's first live album. It was recorded during their 1975 Italian tour, with dates in Milan, Naples, Rimini and Reggio Emilia, and released later the same year. The first of the album concentrates on live versions of some of the band's classics, the flip side features the title-track and a lengthy instrumental which introduces the drum pattern of the song "Giro, Giro, Tondo" (later to be included in the band's following studio album Maledetti (Maudits)), and closes with the Socialist anthem "L'internazionale" as covered by the band in a 1974 single. "Boom Boom" is a song written by American blues singer and guitarist John Lee Hooker and recorded in 1961. Although it became a blues standard, music critic Charles Shaar Murray calls it "the greatest pop song he ever wrote". John Lee Hooker
John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1912 or 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. The son of a sharecropper, he rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930s–1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie. Hooker was ranked 35 in ''Rolling Stone''s 2015 list of 100 greatest guitarists. Demetrio Stratos
Efstratios Dimitriou ( el, Ευστράτιος Δημητρίου; 22 April 1945 – 13 June 1979), known professionally as Demetrio Stratos, was a Greek lyricist, multi-instrumentalist, music researcher, and co-founder, frontman and lead singer of the Italian progressive rock band Area – International POPular Group. Born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, of Greek parents, he studied piano and accordion at the " National Conservatoire". In 1957 he was sent to Nicosia, Cyprus, and, at the age of 17, moved to Milan, Italy, to attend the Politecnico di Milano University at the Architecture Faculty, where he formed his first musical group. In 1967, Demetrio Stratos joined the Italian beat band I Ribelli, and in 1972, founded Area.
