Concerto (ballet)
''Concerto'' is a one-act ballet in three movements created by Kenneth MacMillan in 1966 for the Deutsche Oper Ballet. The music is Dmitri Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto (1957). The ballet premiered on 30 November 1966. Production The ballet is plotless and consists of three movements. The first was originated by Didi Carli and Falco Kapuste. The second movement is a '' pas de deux'' originated by Lynn Seymour and Rudolf Holz, and was inspired by Seymour's warm up. MacMillan had said that he "decided to incorporate the idea of the barre work into the choreography." The man acts as a "barre" for the female dancer. The third and final movement was intended for a "playful" lead couple, but the male dancer broke his foot prior to the premiere, so MacMillan turned the pas de deux to a female solo, danced by Silvia Kesselheim. Kenneth MacMillan
Sir Kenneth MacMillan (11 December 192929 October 1992) was a British ballet dancer and choreographer who was artistic director of the Royal Ballet in London between 1970 and 1977, and its principal choreographer from 1977 until his death. Earlier he had served as director of ballet for the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He was also associate director of the American Ballet Theatre from 1984 to 1989, and artistic associate of the Houston Ballet from 1989 to 1992. From a family with no background of ballet or music, MacMillan was determined from an early age to become a dancer. The director of Sadler's Wells Ballet, Ninette de Valois, accepted him as a student and then a member of her company. In the late 1940s, MacMillan built a successful career as a dancer, but, plagued by stage fright, he abandoned it while still in his twenties. Mayara Magri (dancer)
Mayara Magri is a Brazilian ballet dancer. She is a principal dancer at The Royal Ballet. Her promotion to principal dancer took effect in September 2021. Early life and training Magri was born and raised in Brazil. When she was eight, she received a scholarship to train at Petite Danse School in Rio de Janeiro. When she was sixteen, she won the Senior Age Division of the Youth America Grand Prix and the Prix de Lausanne Scholarship and Audience Prize in 2011. Ryoichi Hirano
Ryoichi Hirano (平野 亮一, born 1983/84) is a Japanese ballet dancer who is currently a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet in London. Early life Hirano was born in Osaka. He had his ballet training at his mother's dance school. His brother was a dancer with the National Ballet of Canada. Career In 2001, after Hirano competed at the Prix de Lausanne, he became an apprentice with The Royal Ballet in London. He made his stage debut as a corps dancer in the third act of Cranko's ''Onegin (ballet), Onegin''. Yasmine Naghdi (born March 25, 1992) is a British ballerina and principal dancer of The Royal Ballet in London. She joined The Royal Ballet in April 2010. In June 2017, she was promoted to the rank of principal ballerina. Early life Naghdi was raised in Kensington, England by a Belgian art historian mother and an Iranian father in the automotive industry. Anna Rose O'Sullivan (born 16 April 1994) is an English ballet dancer and is a principal dancer at the Royal Ballet. Her promotion to principal dancer took effect in September 2021. Rupert Pennefather
Rupert Pennefather is a former principal dancer of the Royal Ballet Company. He joined the company in 1999 and was promoted to principal status alongside his pas-de-deux partner Lauren Cuthbertson in June 2008, following well-received performances in Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Opera House. He left the company in August 2015. Pennefather has gained acclaim despite several setbacks, including failing the annual assessment at the company's White Lodge school at 12, and 'being asked to leave' The Arts Educational School in Tring at 15. Yuhui Choe
Yuhui Choe ( ko, 최유희,崔有熙) is a Korean ballet dancer. She is a first soloist at The Royal Ballet. Early life Choe was born in Fukuoka, Japan. Choe started ballet training at the age of five. At the age of 14, Choe left her family and moved the Paris to train with Daini Kudo and later Dominique Khalfouni. Reece Clarke (born 27 March 1995) is a Scottish ballet dancer. He joined the Royal Ballet in 2013, and was promoted to principal dancer in 2022. Early life and training Clarke is from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire. His father was a steelworker and Clarke's mother worked as a child minder. He is the youngest of four brothers. Clarke began ballet at age three. He initially attended weekly classes at a local dance school that his brothers also attended, before he joined the Royal Ballet School Junior Associates programme, and travelled to London every weekend for training.
