Martin Herem
Martin Herem (born 17 December 1973) is an Estonian lieutenant general and the current Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces since 2018. Herem entered into service in 1992. From 2013 to 2016 he served as the Commandant of the Estonian National Defence College and from 2016 to 2018 Chief of Staff of the Headquarters of the Estonian Defence Forces. Herem was one of the re-founding members of the paramilitary Estonian Defence League in 1990. On 18 February 2021, Martin Herem was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. Riho Terras (born 17 April 1967) is an Estonian politician and a former military officer who is serving as a member of the European Parliament since 1 February 2020. He was the Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces from 2011 to 2018. He was promoted to general in 2017. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2019 and took his seat after Brexit. Ants Laaneots
Ants Laaneots (born 16 January 1948) is an Estonian politician and former military officer. He was previously the Commander of the Defence Forces (Estonia), Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces and a veteran officer in the Soviet Army. Laaneots previously served as the Commandant of the Estonian National Defence College from 2001 to 2006. He was appointed the Commander-in-Chief on 5 December 2006 and was promoted to general in 2011. After retiring from the military, he became a politician. Early life and education Laaneots was born on 16 January 1948 in Kilingi-Nõmme, Estonia. In 1948 the NKVD arrested his father for being a forest brother. The Estonian Border Guard ( et, Eesti Piirivalve) was the national security agency responsible for the border security of Estonia. It was subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior. The Border Guard also assisted with Search and Rescue missions. In 2010, the organization was superseded by the Police and Border Guard Board. Tarmo Kõuts
Tarmo Kõuts (born 27 November 1953) is an Estonian politician and former Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces. Kõuts graduated from Tallinn Maritime School in 1973 and from Kaliningrad Technical Institute in 1985. From 1973 to 1990 he worked in various positions in the Estonian Shipping Company. He served as the rector of Estonian Maritime Academy from 1990 to 1993 and as the director-general of Estonian Border Guard from 1993 to 2000. In September 2000 Rear Admiral Kõuts was appointed commander of the Estonian Defence Forces. Having been promoted to the rank of vice admiral in 2002, Kõuts retained the position until 2006, when he stepped down to move into politics. Aarne Ermus (born on 14 April 1966) is an Estonian military officer. Biography Early life and service in the Soviet Army Aarne Ermus was born on 14 April 1966 in Abja-Paluoja. He graduated Karksi-Nuia Middle School in 1984 and continued his studies in Omsk at the Higher Command Military School.
