Combined Islands Cricket Team
The Combined Islands cricket team was a cricket team that represented the cricket-playing islands of the Lesser Antilles, excluding Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago who fielded their own teams. They played in 13 Shell Shield tournaments from 1965-66 to 1980-81, when they won their first title and were subsequently disbanded into Leeward Islands and Windward Islands. Those two teams had first-class status before 1980–81, but competed together in the Shell Shield. History The Combined Islands played 54 first-class games, winning 11, drawing 19 and losing 24. 52 of those games were in the Shell Shield tournament, with the other two games both coming in the 1961-62 season - a Pentangular Tournament preliminary round loss to British Guiana, was followed by a home defeat to the touring Indian side that same season. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Norbert Philip
Norbert Phillip (born 12 June 1948) is a former cricketer. A bowling all-rounder, with many national players migrating to Kerry Packer's groundbreaking venture, he represented West Indies in nine Tests and one One Day International in the interim (1978 and 1979), also appearing in English county cricket for Essex (in 144 first-class matches) from 1978 until 1985. Domestic cricket Domestically, Phillip appeared for the Combined Islands, playing 31 first-class matches; although he never hit a century for the Combined Islands (he had a highest score of 99), with 106 wickets he was the second-highest wicket taker for the team, one behind Andy Roberts. In 1977-8 he took 21 wickets at 17.71 and scored 230 runs at 76.66 for the Combined Islands, helping to earn his international selection. Mike Findlay
Thaddeus Michael "Mike" Findlay (born 19 October 1943 at Troumaca, Saint Vincent) is a former West Indian cricketer who played in ten Tests from 1969 to 1973 as a wicketkeeper. When he toured Australia and New Zealand in 1968-69, Findlay became the first player from the Leeward and Windward Islands to represent the West Indies. ( Alphonso Roberts came from St Vincent but was playing in Trinidad when he was selected for the West Indies team.) He also toured England in 1969 and 1976. Findlay says he found the experience and support of his teammates helpful when he entered the West Indies team: "I never forgot when I first went on tour with the West Indies team. Vance Amory
Vance Winkworth Amory (22 May 1949 – 2 April 2022) was a Saint Kitts and Nevis politician and cricketer. He served two stints as Premier of Nevis, from 1992 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2017, and served as the Minister of Sports in the Nevis Island Administration. He founded and led the Concerned Citizens' Movement. The airport in Nevis, Vance W. Amory International Airport, bears his name. Early life and career Amory was born on 22 May 1949 in Rawlins Village. He received his elementary, primary and secondary school education in Nevis. He has been an active member of a local church in Nevis since childhood. Amory was known for his fondness for cricket. Elquemedo Willett
Elquemedo Tonito Willett (born 1 May 1953) is a former West Indian international cricketer who played in five Test matches in 1973 and 1974. He made his first-class debut for Leeward Islands in 1970–71 at the age of 17, and played his last match in the 1988–89 season. He took 8 for 73 (his best innings figures) and 3 for 44 for the West Indians against Glamorgan in 1973. During New Zealand's tour of the West Indies in 1972, Willett was considered the best of the many left-arm finger-spinners the New Zealanders faced. Willett's nephew Stuart Williams has played many Tests and ODIs for the West Indies. His sons, Tonito and Akito Willett also play first-class cricket.
