Montevideo () is the Capital city, capital and List of cities in Uruguay, largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country's total population) in an area of . Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata. The Women's Uruguayan Championship is the highest division of women's football in Uruguay, and is organized by the Uruguayan Football Association since 1997, from a FIFA request. Format The current format, first played in 2014, is divided into two stages. The first stage in played in three to four team groups. The best teams then advance to the championship round, called Copa de Oro, while the last placed teams play for the Copa de Plata. Both rounds in the second stage are played with about 7 teams. The winner of the Copa de Oro is the national champion and qualifies to the Copa Libertadores Femenina. The losers of the Copa de Plata are relegated to the Campeonato Uruguayo Femenino B. 2016 Copa Libertadores Femenina
The 2016 Copa Libertadores Femenina was the eighth edition of the Copa Libertadores Femenina, South America's premier women's club football tournament organized by CONMEBOL. The tournament was played in Uruguay from 6 to 20 December 2016. In the first final without a team from Brazil, Paraguayan team Sportivo Limpeño won their first title against Estudiantes de Guárico from Venezuela. Teams The competition was contested by 12 teams: the champions of all ten CONMEBOL associations were given one entry, additionally the title holders re-entered and the host association qualified one more team. The qualifying competitions of each association usually end late in the year (September to December). The Colombian tournament finished last, in fact only a week after the final draw was made. The CONMEBOL Libertadores Femenina, named as "Copa Libertadores Femenina" ( pt, Copa Libertadores Feminina or Taça Libertadores Feminina) is an annual international women's association football club competition in South America. It is organized by the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL). The competition started in the 2009 season in response to the increased interest in women's football. It is the only CONMEBOL club competition for women. The tournament is the women's version of the Copa Libertadores, which is organized since 1960. Since 2019, clubs in the men's Libertadores have been required to have a women's team: failure to do so means their entry will be rejected. The Uruguayan Segunda División was a football league in Uruguay, organised by the AUF.
