Columbus Sims
Columbus Sims (1829–1869) was an American lawyer and Colonel of California Volunteers in the American Civil War. Biography Columbus Sims was a born in South Carolina. He came to Los Angeles, California, in 1852. A popular attorney, he was known for an incident in which he threw an inkstand at his opponent during an altercation in court, an act of contempt of court that did not result in his disbarment. In 1853, he served as a United States District Attorney, Pro Tem, in Oregon. Later, he acted as attorney for Pancho Daniel, leader with Juan Flores of the Flores Daniel Gang on trial for the murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff James R. Barton, until sickness compelled him to retire from the case. From 1856 to 1860, he was the Clerk of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. 2nd Regiment California Volunteer Cavalry
The 2nd Regiment California Volunteer Cavalry was a cavalry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It spent its entire term of service in the western United States, with most of its companies dispersed to various posts. History 2nd Regiment California Volunteer Cavalry was organized under the President's second call upon the State for troops in August 1861. By October 30, 1861, the regiment was organized and mustered into the service. The companies were assembled at Camp Alert in San Francisco. After completing the organization of the regiment, and a short period for drill and discipline, the regiment was sent, by companies, to various posts within the Department of the Pacific. White Pine County, Nevada
White Pine County is a largely rural, mountain county along the central eastern boundary of the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,030. Its county seat is Ely. Hamilton, Nevada
Hamilton is an abandoned mining town located in the White Pine Range, in western White Pine County, Nevada, United States. History Hamilton appeared after the discovery of rich silver ore at Treasure Hill. The first settlers found shelter in local caves, which were numerous. By May 1868, the settlement, then known as "Cave City" was formed. Boom years The town boomed following the discovery of rich silver deposits nearby. With a population of six hundred, it was renamed for mine promoter W. H. Hamilton. The post office first opened for business on August 10, 1868 while the community was still part of Lander County, Nevada. Edward McGarry (soldier-politician)
Edward McGarry (1820 – December 31, 1867) was an officer in the Mexican American War, a Californian politician, and officer of California Volunteers in the American Civil War. He led cavalry at the Bear River Massacre, was later colonel of the 2nd California Cavalry, and later commander of the District of California. He received a brevet promotion to brigadier general of volunteers. After the Civil War he rejoined the U. S. Army as a lieutenant colonel. Edward McGarry was a native of New York, who served as a second lieutenant in the Mexican–American War with the U. S. 10th Infantry Regiment. He saw no action except as part of the garrison army before the peace took effect. McGarry left the Army and traveled to California after the end of the war and became involved in California politics serving as an assemblyman from Napa County's 20th District from 1853 to 1854. Fort Ruby
Fort Ruby, also known as Camp Ruby, was built in 1862 by the United States Army, during the American Civil War, in the "wilderness of eastern Nevada." It protected the overland mail coaches and Pony Express, in order to maintain links and communication between residents of California and the Union. It was operated 1862 to 1869, in territory dominated by bands of the Western Shoshone. The fort was located at the east entrance to the Overland Pass from Ruby Valley, near Hobson on the west side of Ruby Lake. To secure access and safe passage through this area, as well as to provide for construction of railroads and other needs, the US signed the Treaty of Ruby Valley with twelve chiefs of the Western Shoshone, who did not cede any territory. Patrick Edward Connor (March 17, 1820Rodgers, 1938, p. 1 – December 17, 1891) was an American soldier who served as a Union general during the American Civil War. He is most notorious for his massacres against Native Americans during the Indian Wars in the American Old West. Early life and career Patrick Edward Connor was born in rural County Kerry, Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, 1820. He emigrated to the United States and enlisted, as "Patrick Edward O'Connor", in the United States Army on November 28, 1839. In addition to service in the Seminole Wars,Long, 2001, p. 96 he served as a dragoon at Fort Leavenworth, Fort Atkinson, Fort Sandford, and at the second Fort Des Moines. David Douty Colton
General David Douty Colton (July 17, 1831– October 9, 1878) was an American pioneer, entrepreneur, and politician. The city of Colton, California, is named for him. Early life Colton was born in the state of Maine, of Isacc W. Colton and Abigail Douty. The family moved west when he was a child, via Galesburg, Illinois. He became engaged to Ellen M. White of Chicago, but made his way to Sacramento, California, and on to Oregon in 1850 before getting married. Just across the border into California, he took up gold prospecting in Siskiyou County, California, when it was still dangerous to do so among the Native American population there. Colton settled in California at Yreka, where he became sheriff of Siskiyou County for four years.
