Columbus Blue Birds
The Columbus Blue Birds were a professional Negro league baseball team based in Columbus, Ohio in 1931 and 1933. Founding Their name appears to have been derived from that of the Columbus Red Birds, the top-level minor league baseball team that played in the American Association from 1931 through 1954. Columbus was an associate team to the first Negro National League in 1931. The Blue Birds, which were one of the five founder members of the second incarnation of the Negro National League, were organized under the ownership of WJ Peebles of Columbus. Peebles was reported to have built up "a formidable aggregation" and one that was fast growing in favor in the capital city.Newark Advocate. Leroy Morney (May 13, 1909 – March 23, 1979) was an American baseball shortstop in the Negro leagues. He played from 1929 to 1944 with several teams. Ted Radcliffe
Theodore Roosevelt "Double Duty" Radcliffe (July 7, 1902 – August 11, 2005) was a professional baseball player in the Negro leagues. An accomplished two-way player, he played as a pitcher and a catcher, became a manager, and in his old age became a popular ambassador for the game. He is one of only a handful of professional baseball players who lived past their 100th birthdays, next to Red Hoff (who lived to 107) and fellow Negro leaguer Silas Simmons (who lived to age 103). Newspaperman Damon Runyon coined the nickname "Double Duty" because Radcliffe played as a catcher and as a pitcher in the successive games of a 1932 doubleheader between the Pittsburgh Crawfords and the New York Black Yankees. In the first of the two games at Yankee Stadium, Radcliffe caught the pitcher Satchel Paige for a shutout and then pitched a shutout in the second game. Dizzy Dismukes
William "Dizzy" Dismukes (March 15, 1890 – June 30, 1961) was an American pitcher and manager in Negro league baseball and during the pre-Negro league years. Career Dismukes was a right-handed submariner, who is considered by many historians to be one of the best pitchers in the Negro leagues. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, he began his baseball career at age 17. Among his achievements as a pitcher, he defeated the then-major league champion Pittsburgh Pirates 2–1, in an exhibition game in 1911. While a player, he periodically wrote about baseball for such black newspapers as the ''Pittsburgh Courier'', beginning in the 1920s. Among the teams he played for were the Brooklyn (NY) Royal Giants, Indianapolis ABCs and the St. Louis Stars. Oland Cecil "Lou" Dials (January 10, 1904 – April 5, 1994) was an American baseball player in the Negro leagues. He played from 1925 to 1936 with several teams. He was the 1931 batting champ. Bill Byrd
William Byrd (July 15, 1907 – January 4, 1991) was an American professional baseball player in the Negro leagues. Born in Canton, Georgia, he was a right-handed pitcher. He was named in eight All-Star games for six seasons. Byrd also saw action with the Criollos de Caguas and Cangrejeros de Santurce clubs of the Puerto Rico Winter League, where he was considered one of the best hurlers. He died at age 83 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Baseball career Byrd started his major career in 1933 with the Columbus Blue Birds in the Negro National League. He went 3–8 that year, pitching a 4.26 ERA in thirteen games while recording one save in 95 innings pitched. He led the league in losses along with walks per nine innings with 1.1.
