Columbia 40
The Columbia 40 is an American sailboat that was designed by Charles Morgan as a racer-cruiser and first built in 1964. The design was based upon Morgan's ''Sabre'', a one-off racing boat that was successful in competition, winning Class C 1964 Southern Ocean Racing Circuit (SORC) and second place overall. ''Sabre'' was derived from the racing ketch ''Paper Tiger'' which was the overall winner of the 1961 and 1962 SORC racing series. Production The design was built by Columbia Yachts in the United States. The company built 55 examples of the type from 1964 to 1969. Design The factory sales brochure described the design goals, "A real yacht designed to go to sea in comfort while giving top performance." Charley Morgan
Charley E. Morgan (1929 - 2023) is a legendary American sailboat racer and designer. He is best known as the founder of Morgan Yacht Corporation. Early life Morgan was born in Chicago November 1929 and raised in Florida. Morgan built the yacht ''Brisote'' and completed a St. Petersburg, Florida to Havana, Cuba race with Bruce Bidwell. Morgan attended the University of Tampa and took a job with Johnson Sails, located at the Jean Street Shipyard on the Hillsborough River. In 1952 he founded Morgan Racing Sails in Tampa, FL. While making sails Morgan met yacht designer George Luzier, who got him interested in designing boats. Racing In 1957, Morgan, along with Charlie Hunt, designed and built ''Brisote'', a 31-foot plywood yawl. After successfully appealing disqualification due to a lack of engine, he entered the Havana race and took second in ''Brisote's'' division. Yawl
A yawl is a type of boat. The term has several meanings. It can apply to the rig (or sailplan), to the hull type or to the use which the vessel is put. As a rig, a yawl is a two masted, fore and aft rigged sailing vessel with the mizzen mast positioned abaft (behind) the rudder stock, or in some instances, very close to the rudder stock. This is different from a ketch, where the mizzen mast is forward of the rudder stock. The sail area of the mizzen on a yawl is consequentially proportionately smaller than the same sail on a ketch. As a hull type, yawl may refer to many types of open, clinker-built, double-ended, traditional working craft that operated from the beaches of Britain and Ireland. The Columbia 33 Caribbean is an American sailboat that was designed by Wirth Munroe as deep water cruiser and first built in 1963. The Columbia 33 Caribbean is a development of the Arco 33, which was built by Crystaliner, who completed 15 examples in 1959, before selling the molds to Columbia Yachts. Columbia 34
The Columbia 34 is an American sailboat that was designed by Wirth Munroe and Richard Valdez as a cruiser and first built in 1966. The Columbia 34 is a development of the Columbia 33 Caribbean, using a deck adapted from the Columbia 40. The Columbia 34 was replaced in the company product line in 1970, by the unrelated William H. Tripp Jr. designed Columbia 34 Mark II. Production The design was built by Columbia Yachts in the United States, but it is now out of production. Some of the boats were sold as kits for owner completion. Design Dick Valdes described how the Columbia 34 design came about, in a talk given at the Long Beach Rendezvous on 23 February 2002. Head (watercraft)
The head (pl. heads) is a ship's toilet. The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship. Design In sailing ships, the toilet was placed in the bow somewhat above the water line with vents or slots cut near the floor level allowing normal wave action to wash out the facility. Only the captain had a private toilet near his quarters, at the stern of the ship in the quarter gallery. Forestay
On a sailing vessel, a forestay, sometimes just called a stay, is a piece of standing rigging which keeps a mast from falling backwards. It is attached either at the very top of the mast, or in fractional rigs between about 1/8 and 1/4 from the top of the mast. The other end of the forestay is attached to the bow of the boat. Often a sail is attached to the forestay. This sail may be a jib or a genoa. In a cutter rig, the jib or jibs are flown from stays in front of the forestay, perhaps going from the masthead to a bowsprit. The sail on the forestay is then referred to as the staysail or stays'l. Tiller
A tiller or till is a lever used to steer a vehicle. The mechanism is primarily used in watercraft, where it is attached to an outboard motor, rudder post or stock to provide leverage in the form of torque for the helmsman to turn the rudder.
