State Highway 389 (SH 389) is a state highway in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States, that connects New Mexico State Road 551 (NM 551) at the New Mexico state line with U.S. Route 160 (US 160), north of Branson. Route description SH 389 begins at the New Mexico border as the continuation of NM 551. It traverses several small passes of up to before entering the town of Branson about north of the New Mexico border. As the highway proceeds northward from Branson, valleys and hills surround the area and the Black Mesa comes into view. However, no mountains are visible. The highway ends at its junction with US 160 between of Trinidad and Kim, about north of Branson. The Comanche National Grassland is nearby. The Town of Branson is a Statutory Town located in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 57 at the 2020 United States Census. Branson is the southernmost town in the State of Colorado, located just from the New Mexico border. Branson is located approximately 35 miles east of Trinidad, Colorado, on State Highway 389, in the Great Plains, as well in the Black Mesa area, the town is surrounded by mesa. It is a ranching community today. Farming in the area was severely impacted by the dust bowl. Trinidad is the home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,329 as of the 2020 census. Trinidad lies north of Raton, New Mexico, and south of Denver. It is on the historic Santa Fe Trail. Comanche National Grassland is a National Grassland located in southeastern Colorado, United States. It is the sister grassland of Cimarron National Grassland and contains both prairie grasslands and canyons. It is separated into two sections, each operated by a local ranger district, one of which is in Springfield and the other of which is in La Junta. The grassland is administered by the Forest Service together with the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, and the Cimarron National Grassland, from common headquarters located in Pueblo, Colorado. Folsom is a village in Union County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 56 at the 2010 census, down from 75 in 2000. The town was named after Frances Folsom, the fiancée of President Grover Cleveland. History Folsom gives its name to the nearby type site for the Folsom Tradition, a Paleo-Indian cultural sequence dating to between 9000 and 8000 BC. The Folsom site, about 8 miles west of the village, was excavated in 1926, and found to have been a marsh-side kill site or camp where 23 bison had been killed using distinctive tools, known as Folsom points.
