Colorado State Highway 109
State Highway 109 (SH 109) is a long state highway in southeastern Colorado. SH 109's southern terminus is at U.S. Route 160 (US 160) north of Kim, and the northern terminus a continuation north as Grand Avenue in Cheraw. Route description The road begins in the south at its junction with US 160 roughly two miles north of Kim. From there the road proceeds northward for through remote, sparsely populated land, including a section of Comanche National Grassland, before reaching La Junta, the first of only two towns along the route's length. At La Junta, SH 109 intersects US 50 indirectly via SH 109 Spur (3rd Street). After crossing over US 50, the road continues northward, passing the La Junta Municipal Airport, to the small town of Cheraw where the road officially ends by becoming a city street called Grand Avenue. The Town of Kim is a Statutory Town in Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. La Junta, Colorado
La Junta is a home rule municipality in , the county seat of, and the most populous municipality of Otero County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 7,322 at the 2020 United States Census. La Junta is located on the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado east of Pueblo. History La Junta (Spanish for "the junction") was named for the fact it rested at the intersection of the Santa Fe Trail and a pioneer road to Pueblo. The town developed near Bent's Fort, a fur trading post of the 19th century. During World War II, La Junta had an Army Air Force Training Base outside town. An Air Force detachment of the Strategic Air Command remained there until modern flight simulators developed in the 1980s rendered live flight unnecessary for pilot training maneuvers. The Town of Cheraw is a Statutory Town located in Otero County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 237 at the 2020 United States Census. History In 1917, Cheraw was the smallest town in the world with a regimental band. Bent County, Colorado
Bent County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,650. The county seat and only incorporated municipality is Las Animas. The county is named in honor of frontier trader William Bent. History As Colorado experienced population growth following the American Civil War, government had to be closer to the people for commerce and justice to be better served in growing communities. Territorial Bent County was created in February 1870, followed by Greenwood County the following month. Comanche National Grassland
Comanche National Grassland is a National Grassland located in southeastern Colorado, United States. It is the sister grassland of Cimarron National Grassland and contains both prairie grasslands and canyons. It is separated into two sections, each operated by a local ranger district, one of which is in Springfield and the other of which is in La Junta. The grassland is administered by the Forest Service together with the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, and the Cimarron National Grassland, from common headquarters located in Pueblo, Colorado.
