Collegeport is an unincorporated community in Matagorda County, Texas, United States. Founded on May 25, 1908, Collegeport is located on Tres Palacios Bay, which outlets into Matagorda Bay. Despite the community's name, there is no college in Collegeport, although the Texas State Technical College Marine Education Center is located across Tres Palacios Bay in Palacios, Texas, a 25-minute drive away. History Early days Collegeport was acquired through a land purchase in 1908. Ranchers Jonathan Edward Pierce and Abel Brown Pierce sold their land to developer Burton D. Hurd. In the agreement Hurd would develop a town that would include a college and a port on the Trespalacios Bay. Families began relocating to Collegeport, also called the "Town of Opportunity", after an advertising venture by Hurd that promoted the area's mild climate and the prospective farming lands. Palacios ( ) is a city in Matagorda County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,395 at the 2020 census. Etymology Popular local legend states that the area was named Tres Palacios ("Three Palaces") several centuries ago by shipwrecked Spanish sailors who claimed they saw a vision of three palaces on the bay. Historians believe it was more likely named for José Félix Trespalacios, an early Mexican governor of Texas. The town was originally called Trespalacios, but shortened its name due to a nearby post office already using the longer version. Hurricane Carla ranks as the most intense U.S. tropical cyclone landfall on the Hurricane Severity Index. It was the ninth most intense hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. The third named storm of the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season, Carla developed from an area of squally weather in the southwestern Caribbean Sea on September 3.
