Colin Bettany
Colin David Bettany (born 15 June 1932) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Crewe Alexandra and Torquay United. Bettany, a Leicester-born full back, was an amateur with his local side Leicester City when he signed professional forms with Crewe Alexandra in August 1953. Six goals from 29 league games led to a transfer to Birmingham City in June 1955, but in two years at St Andrew's he was never to make a league appearance. In April 1957 he joined Torquay United, making his debut at centre forward on the opening day of the following season in a 3–0 defeat away to Colchester United. After three games Bettany lost his place as Torquay manager Eric Webber shuffled his side to allow Dennis Lewis to return after injury. After two games on the sidelines, Bettany returned to the side, but at full-back where he was to establish himself. Non-League football describes football leagues played outside the top leagues of a country. Usually, it describes leagues which are not fully professional. The term is primarily used for football in England, where it is specifically used to describe all football played at levels below those of the Premier League (20 clubs) and the three divisions of the English Football League (EFL; 72 clubs). Currently, a non-League team would be any club playing in the National League or below that level. Typically, non-League clubs are either semi-professional or amateur in status, although the majority of clubs in the National League are fully professional, some of which are former EFL clubs who have suffered relegation. In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. In a system of promotion and relegation, the best-ranked team(s) in the lower division are ''promoted'' to the higher division for the next season, and the worst-ranked team(s) in the higher division are ''relegated'' to the lower division for the next season. In some leagues, playoffs or qualifying rounds are also used to determine rankings. This process can continue through several levels of divisions, with teams being exchanged between adjacent divisions. The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season. Whilst the division disappeared in name in 1992, the 4th tier of English football continued as the Football League Third Division, and later became known as Football League Two. Dennis Lewis (footballer)
Dennis Lewis (21 April 1925 – November 1996) was a Welsh footballer who played for Torquay United for twelve years, racking up 442 appearances in the Football League (474 over all competitions). Until May 2008 he was the club's record appearance holder, Kevin Hill overcoming his tally. Playing career Lewis signed professional forms with Swansea Town in August 1946, but failed to make it onto the pitch for the club and so moved on to Torquay United twelve months later. He scored on his league debut, a 2–0 home win over Aldershot. He soon became an indispensable member of the first eleven, and was an ever-present for two consecutive seasons, one of which was the 1954-55 season which saw ''the Gulls'' record an historic triumph over Leeds United in the FA Cup. Eric Victor Webber (22 December 1919 – 10 December 1996) was an English footballer, playing as a centre-half, and manager. Playing career Early days Although he was born at Shoreham in West Sussex, Webber's family moved into Hampshire when he was a child and he played for Fareham Senior School, before joining Fareham Town and then Gosport Borough. He had an unsuccessful trial with Portsmouth before Jim Angell recommended him to Tom Parker, the manager of Norwich City. In 1937, he followed Parker to Southampton where he was initially a member of the club's nursery side, playing in the Hampshire League.
