Cold Mountain (opera)
''Cold Mountain'' is an American opera in two acts and an epilogue, with music by Jennifer Higdon and the libretto by Gene Scheer, based on Charles Frazier's 1997 novel of the same name. The opera is a co-commission between Santa Fe Opera, Opera Philadelphia and the Minnesota Opera, in collaboration with North Carolina Opera. The opera received its world premiere at Santa Fe Opera on 1 August 2015. This production coincided with the 150th anniversary of the ending of the American Civil War. Opera Philadelphia gave its first performance of the opera, in a slightly revised form, on 5 February 2016. North Carolina Opera gave the opera its home state premiere on 28 September 2017. The Minnesota Opera staged the opera in 2018 as part of its New Works Initiative. The Virginia Opera also featured performances of the opera during February 2021 as part of its themed "Love is a Battlefield" 2020–2021 season. Jennifer Higdon
Jennifer Elaine Higdon (born December 31, 1962) is an American composer of contemporary classical music. She has received many awards, including the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Music for her Violin Concerto and three Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for her Percussion Concerto in 2010, Viola Concerto in 2018, and Harp Concerto in 2020. Elected a Member of the American Philosophical Society in 2019, she was a professor of composition at the Curtis Institute of Music from 1994 to 2021. Biography Higdon was born in Brooklyn, New York. She spent the first 10 years of her life in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to Seymour, Tennessee. Her father, Charles Higdon, was a painter and made efforts to expose his children to different types of art. Heather Phillips
Heather Phillips is an American operatic coloratura soprano. She began her career at the Santa Fe Opera where she created there the role of Katie in Jennifer Higdon's '' Cold Mountain'' in 2015. She made her European debut at the Oper Frankfurt in 2022 in the title role of Rossini's ''Bianca e Falliero''. Life Phillips studied at the University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music, obtaining both Bachelor and Master of Arts diplomas. She was a member of the Santa Fe Opera's studio, appearing as Sardula in Menotti's ''The Last Savage'' and as Contessa in Rossini's ''Il viaggio a Reims''. Robert Pomakov (born February 25, 1981) is a Canadian operatic bass. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Pomakov graduated from St. Michael's Choir School, Toronto, in 1999. In the summer of 1999 he attended the summer conservatory program at the Music Academy of the West. He later studied at the Curtis Institute of Music. Anthony Michaels-Moore (born 8 April 1957) is an English operatic baritone and the first British winner of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition (Philadelphia, 1985). Michaels-Moore has since performed in many of the world's major opera houses across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
