Cohasset Punch
Cohasset Punch is a brand of rum-based drink introduced in 1899. First created by Chicago bartenders Lewis A. Williams and Thomas C. Newman, Cohasset Punch was long associated with the Ladner Bros. bar on Madison Street in the Chicago Loop, who produced it until the 1980s. Though officially classified as a liqueur, Cohasset Punch can also be considered a bottled cocktail or punch, and has been referred to as "the definitive Chicago cocktail". In 2024, bottled Cohasset Punch was relaunched under new ownership. History In the late 1890s, Chicago saloon owner and liquor dealer Lewis A. Williams was invited to spend a few weeks at the Cohasset, Massachusetts summer estate of long-time family friend, actor William H. Crane. Alcohol proof (usually termed simply "proof" in relation to a beverage) is a measure of the content of ethanol (alcohol) in an alcoholic beverage. The term was originally used in England and was equal to about 1.8 times the percentage of alcohol by volume (ABV). The UK now uses ABV instead of proof. Orange bitters is a form of bitters, a cocktail flavoring made from such ingredients as the peels of Seville oranges, cardamom, caraway seed, coriander, anise, and burnt sugar in an alcohol base. Edward Burgess (1848–1891) was an American yacht designer. Several of his boats won fame in the waters of the eastern United States. Early life and education Edward Burgess was born in West Sandwich, Massachusetts on June 30, 1848, the fifth son of Benjamin Franklin Burgess (1818–1909) and Cordelia Williams Ellis (1821–1876).
