Cognition (journal)
''Cognition: International Journal of Cognitive Science'' is a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering cognitive science. It was established in 1972 and is published by Elsevier. History ''Cognition'' is one of the few psychology journals of the 20th century that developed outside of the United States. The journal, founded by Jacques Mehler and Thomas Bever in 1972, was initially published quarterly, then every other month from 1982, and finally on a monthly basis since 1985. Work in the journal is considered "highly cited," and is noted to adequately represent research on an international level. Jacques Mehler
Jacques Mehler (17 August 1936 – 11 February 2020) was a cognitive psychologist specializing in language acquisition. Education Mehler studied chemistry and obtained his ''Licenciatura en Ciencias Quimicas'' at the Universidad de Buenos Aires from 1952 to 1958. After that, he went to Oxford University and University College of London where he obtained his B. Sc. degree in 1959. From 1961 to 1964, he studied at Harvard University, at the time of the ''cognitive revolution'', where he worked with George A. Miller and obtained a PhD. in Psychology. Career Mehler was Emeritus at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, where he directed the Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique (LSCP); he was also the head of the ''Language, Cognition and Development lab'' at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste (Italy). Cognition refers to "the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses". It encompasses all aspects of intellectual functions and processes such as: perception, attention, thought, intelligence, the formation of knowledge, memory and working memory, judgment and evaluation, reasoning and computation, problem solving and decision making, comprehension and production of language. Thomas Bever
Thomas G. Bever (born December 9, 1939) is a Regent's Professor of Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, and Neuroscience at the University of Arizona. He has been a leading figure in psycholinguistics, focusing on the cognitive and neurological bases of linguistic universals, among other pursuits. Bever received a B.A. in linguistics and psychology from Harvard University in 1961, and a Ph.D. in linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967; he studied with Noam Chomsky, George A. Miller, and Jean Piaget. He taught at Rockefeller University from 1967–1969, Columbia University from 1970–1986 (where he was involved with Project Nim), and the University of Rochester from 1985–1995, before accepting his current position at the University of Arizona, where he has remained ever since.
