Ginepro Cocchi
Ginepro Cocchi, OMI (13 October 1908 – 6 March 1939), born ''Antonio Cocchi'', was an Italian religious priest of the Order of Friars Minor. He took the name of ''Ginepro'' after admittance into the Franciscan order. He served in the missions in China until 1939 when he was killed while evangelizing in Chinese villages. He is buried in China. He is a candidate for beatification with the title Servant of God. Life Antonio Cocchi was born in Artena on 13 October 1908 to Attilio Cocchi and Italia Cioccali. He commenced his studies for the priesthood in 1918 and was noted for his innocence and his mode of life. These mirrored the observations of the rector Elia Carosi who was struck with the humble and diligent seminarian. Gioacchino Cocchi (''circa'' 1712 – 11 September 1796) was a Neapolitan composer, principally of opera. Cocchi was probably born in Naples in about 1712, although his place of birth has also been given as Padova. His first works were performed in Naples and in Rome; the most successful was ''La maestra'', written in Naples in 1747. It was performed at the Teatro Nuovo sopra Toledo of that city in the spring of 1747, and at the Teatro Formagliari of Bologna in October of the same year; on 11 March 1749 it was given at the King's Theatre, and in 1752 at the Teatro de' Fiorentini of Naples, with the title ''La scaltra governante''. The Obelisks of the Corsa dei Cocchi, or Aguglie di Piazza Santa Maria Novella are two 16th-century, four-sided, marble obelisk monuments located in the Piazza of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, region of Tuscany, Italy. The obelisks replaced two pyramidal wooden structures used to mark the margins of the track used in a festival race, Palio dei Cocchi, held the day before the day of San Giovanni. The present obelisks were designed in 1570 by Bartolomeo Ammannati, with the help of the stonemasons Raffaello and Giovanni Maria Carli. The idea for the four turtles, upon which the marble obelisks perch, has more recently been attributed to Giambologna or his pupil, Pietro Tacca.
