Coburg Harriers
Coburg Harriers is an athletics club located in Coburg, in the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. The club is based at the Harold Stevens Athletics Track. History The club was founded in 1896. The first general meeting of the club was held at the Public Hall in Coburg on Monday, 30 March 1896. The club affiliated with the Victorian Amateur Athletics Association (VAAA) on 13 May 1896. The first official uniform was all white, with royal blue facings and a royal blue capital C on the front. The club was located in a shed at the rear of the Corner Hotel, on the corner of Bell Street and Sydney Road, Coburg. The first competitive event that Coburg Harriers participated in was on 20 September 1896 in the Victorian 10 mile Cross Country Championship where the Club finished 11th. Herb Elliott
Herbert James Elliott (born 25 February 1938) is a former Australian athlete and arguably the world's greatest middle distance runner of his era. In August 1958 he set the List of world records in athletics, world record in the mile run, clocking 3:54.5, 2.7 seconds under the record held by Derek Ibbotson; later in the month he set the 1500 metres world record, running 3.36.0, 2.1 seconds under the record held by Stanislav Jungwirth. In the 1500 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics, he won the gold medal and bettered his own world record with a time of 3:35.6. Herb Elliot never lost a mile run and accomplished 36 wins over this distance. During his career, he broke four minutes for the mile on 17 occasions. Raelene Boyle
Raelene Ann Boyle (born 24 June 1951) is an Australian retired athlete, who represented Australia at three Olympic Games as a sprinter, winning three silver medals, and was named one of 100 National Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia in 1998. Boyle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and subsequently became a board member of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). In 2017, she was named a Legend in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Carolyn Lewis
Carolyn Jean Lewis (née Wright; born 16 January 1946) is an Australian former athlete who competed in the high jump. She competed for the Novacastrians club in Newcastle and the Ryde Athletics Club in Sydney. Upon marriage she moved to Melbourne where she competed for the Coburg Athletics Club alongside athletes such as Raelene Boyle and Jean Roberts. At the age of 16, Wright was selected to compete in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth where she placed sixth. Through her career, she won six Australian Championships and had a personal best of 1.74 metres, set in 1962. In 1972, Wright married Olympic sprinter Greg Lewis. Jean Roberts
Jean Evelyn Roberts (born 18 August 1943) is a former Australian Olympic athlete who competed in the shot put and discus throw events. She competed for the Coburg club, alongside athletes such as Raelene Boyle and Carolyn Lewis. Roberts won a total of 13 Australian Championships in Athletics between 1962 and 1970, including eight in the Shot. She also won two British Championships in the Shot Put in 1971 and 1972. Jean was a versatile athlete, winning the 1967 Victorian State Pentathlon championship with 3985 points and placing second in 1969. She competed at four Commonwealth Games between 1962 and 1974, winning medals on each occasion, and represented Australia at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Neville Sillitoe
Neville John Sillitoe (24 April 1925 – 20 June 2021) was an Australian athletics coach. Sillitoe competed for the Coburg Athletic Club. Upon his retirement, he took up athletics coaching and helped lay the foundations for one of the most successful eras of Australian sprinting with the East Melbourne Harriers Athletic Club. Australian representatives that Sillitoe has coached include Peter Norman, Gary Holdsworth, Greg Lewis (athlete), Greg Lewis, Aaron Rouge-Serret, Colin McQueen, Denise Boyd, Richard James (Australian sprinter), Richard James, Bruce Frayne, Tamsyn Lewis and Ken Hall. He was the coach of the 1982 Commonwealth Games Team and held a long serving athletics coaching post with Caulfield Grammar School in Melbourne from 1983 to 2014.
