Carolyn Lewis
Carolyn Jean Lewis (née Wright; born 16 January 1946) is an Australian former athlete who competed in the high jump. She competed for the Novacastrians club in Newcastle and the Ryde Athletics Club in Sydney. Upon marriage she moved to Melbourne where she competed for the Coburg Athletics Club alongside athletes such as Raelene Boyle and Jean Roberts. At the age of 16, Wright was selected to compete in the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth where she placed sixth. Through her career, she won six Australian Championships and had a personal best of 1.74 metres, set in 1962. In 1972, Wright married Olympic sprinter Greg Lewis. High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is contested at the World Championships in Athletics and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and is a common occurrence at track and field meets. Raelene Boyle
Raelene Ann Boyle (born 24 June 1951) is an Australian retired athlete, who represented Australia at three Olympic Games as a sprinter, winning three silver medals, and was named one of 100 National Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia in 1998. Boyle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and subsequently became a board member of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). In 2017, she was named a Legend in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Early life Boyle was born on 24 June 1951, the daughter of Gilbert and Irene Boyle, in Coburg, a suburb of Melbourne. She was educated at Coburg High School in Melbourne. Jean Roberts
Jean Evelyn Roberts (born 18 August 1943) is a former Australian Olympic athlete who competed in the shot put and discus throw events. She competed for the Coburg club, alongside athletes such as Raelene Boyle and Carolyn Lewis. Roberts won a total of 13 Australian Championships in Athletics between 1962 and 1970, including eight in the Shot. She also won two British Championships in the Shot Put in 1971 and 1972. Jean was a versatile athlete, winning the 1967 Victorian State Pentathlon championship with 3985 points and placing second in 1969. She competed at four Commonwealth Games between 1962 and 1974, winning medals on each occasion, and represented Australia at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. The Australian Athletics Championships or Australian Open Track and Field Championships are held annually to determine Australia's champion athletes in a range of athletics events. The championships are the primary qualification trial for athletes wishing to compete at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships. The event is conducted by Athletics Australia. Greg Lewis (athlete)
Gregory Lewis (born 9 December 1946 in Victoria) is a former Australian Olympic athlete who competed in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Achievements Lewis won six Australian Championships during his career and represented Australia at the 1968 Olympic Games and two Commonwealth Games. In his final international competition, the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, Lewis won a gold medal as part of the victorious Australian 4 x 100 metres relay team. Tamsyn Carolyn Lewis (born 20 July 1978) is an Australian media personality and former track and field athlete who won a total of eighteen Australian Championships across the 400 metres, 800 metres and 400m hurdles. She first represented Australia in 1994, and won the 800 metres in the 2008 World Indoor Championships. 800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m.
