William Weber Coblentz (November 20, 1873 – September 15, 1962) was an American physicist notable for his contributions to infrared radiometry and spectroscopy. Early life, education, and employment William Coblentz was born in North Lima, Ohio to parents of German and Swiss descent. His mother (Catherine) died when Coblentz was just under three, leaving him temporarily with a family of just his younger brother (Oscar) and their father (David). However, the father remarried about 2 years later, and Coblentz appears to have admired his second mother (Amelia). Throughout Coblentz's childhood and adolescence, his family lived on farms, but apparently were never able to buy one of their own. The family's extremely modest circumstances led to a somewhat-delayed education for Coblentz, who did not finish high school (Youngstown, Ohio) until 1896, when he was 22 years old. Catherine Cate Coblentz
Catherine Cate Coblentz (June 5, 1897 – May 30, 1951) was an American writer, best known for her children's books in the 1930s and 1940s. She was a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and Newbery Honor laureate. Life and work Born in Hardwick, Vermont, Catherine Cate worked during World War I at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., where she met her future husband, William Coblentz, an American scientist who was a pioneer in the field of infrared spectroscopy. They were married on June 10, 1924. Two daughters were born to the couple, but both died young. Coblentz published a poem on Mars in ''Popular Astronomy'' magazine in 1924, the same year that her husband was measuring the temperature of Mars at the Lowell Observatory. Clara Rankin Coblentz (, Rankin; August 19, 1863 – March 6, 1933) was an American temperance reformer and clubwoman. Coblentz held leadership positions in a number of organizations including president of the Non-Partisan National Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Presbyterian Foreign Missionary Society (Clarion), and the Home and Foreign Missionary Society (Clarion). Early life and education Clara Amelia Rankin was born at Madison Furnace, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, August 19, 1863. Her parents were Calvin Alexander and Emma (Burnside) Rankin. There were six younger siblings: Kate, Lillie, Mary, Margaret, Alda, and William. She was educated in Clarion High School, and graduated from Carrier Seminary (later Clarion State Normal School) in 1880. Coblentz is a small lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon, to the south of the much larger crater Bolyai. This crater retains a circular rim, but it has been worn by impact erosion. This is particularly so at the southern end where an irregular gap exists in the rim.
