Clypeococcum Bisporum
''Clypeococcum bisporum'' is a species of lichenicolous (lichen-eating) fungus in the family Polycoccaceae. It is found in the Russian Far East, in Mongolia, and from northwest Alaska, where it grows parasitically on lichens from the genera ''Cetraria'' and '' Flavocetraria''. Taxonomy ''Clypeococcum bisporum'' was scientifically described as new to science in 2009 by Russian lichenologist Mikhail Zhurbenko. The type specimen was collected by the author from the Lena river delta on Stolb Island ( Yakutiya, Russia); there, the fungus was found growing parasitically on the lichen ''Flavocetraria cucullata'', which itself was growing on the ground in tundra. The species epithet ''bisporum'' refers to its two-spored asci. Zhurbenko noted that although the general morphological profile of the fungus is consistent with ''Clypeococcum'', all of the other known species of that genus have four- or eight-spored asci. A lichenicolous fungus is a parasitic fungus that only lives on lichen as the host. A lichenicolous fungus is not the same as the fungus that is the component of the lichen, which is known as a lichenized fungus. They are most commonly specific to a given fungus as the host, but they also include a wide range of pathogens, saprotrophs, and commensals. The Trypetheliales are an order of fungi in the class Dothideomycetes. Most of the species in the order form lichens, although some are lichenicolous fungi. ''Cetraria laevigata'' is a species of ground-dwelling, fruticose (bushy) lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. It was formally described as a new species by Russian lichenologist Kseniya Aleksandrovna Rassadina in 1943. In North America, it is commonly known as the striped Iceland lichen. Description The thallus of ''Cetraria laevigata'' is pale brown, with an even paler underside. It comprises smooth and shiny, narrow lobes measuring 1–3 mm across.
