''Clotilde García del Castillo'' is an 1890 oil-on-canvas painting by the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla. It is part of the collection of the Sorolla Museum, in Madrid. Description It is a portrait by Sorolla of his wife, Clotilde García del Castillo. In the painting, she is depicted seating on a wooden chair, clad in an elegant black dress (a sort of a high neck gown) with brown gloves, posing for the painting with a tilted posture on the right, her right hand firmly rested on a pillow kept on the chair and her fingers touching her cheek and chin while her left hand rests on the armrest. Her hair is bound at the top of her head and crowned with a yellow flower. The light and neutral background of the canvas removes any notion of perspective, following a technique used by Diego Velázquez. Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida ( va, Joaquim Sorolla i Bastida, 27 February 1863 – 10 August 1923) was a Spanish Valencian painter. Sorolla excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes and monumental works of social and historical themes. His most typical works are characterized by a dexterous representation of the people and landscape under the bright sunlight of Spain and sunlit water. Biography Early life Joaquín Sorolla was born on 27 February 1863 in Valencia, Spain. Sorolla was the eldest child born to a tradesman, also named Joaquín Sorolla, and his wife, Concepción Bastida. His sister, Concha, was born a year later. In August 1865, both children were orphaned when their parents died, possibly from cholera. Sorolla Museum
The Museum Sorolla (Spanish: ''Museo Sorolla'') is a public museum located in Madrid, Spain. It features work by the artist Joaquín Sorolla, as well as by members of his family such as his daughter Elena. The building was originally the artist's house and was converted into a museum after the death of his widow. Designed by Enrique María Repullés, it was declared ''Bien de Interés Cultural'' in 1962. The principal rooms continue to be furnished as they were during the artist's life, including Sorolla's large, well-lit studio, where the walls are filled with his canvasses. Other rooms are used as galleries to display Sorolla's paintings, while the upstairs rooms are a gallery for temporary exhibitions. Diego Velázquez
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. ''Walk on the beach'' (Spanish: ''Paseo a la orilla del mar'' or ''Paseo a orillas del mar'') is a 1909 oil-on-canvas painting by the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla. Description It has a height of 205 cm and a width of 200 cm. and shows the wife and eldest daughter of the painter during a walk on the beach in Valencia. The painting is part of the collection of the Museo Sorolla in Madrid. Analysis The large canvas is almost square in format and unusually monumental for a beach view. The life-size women depicted are Sorolla's wife Clotilde and his eldest daughter Maria. Sorolla painted the scenery at the Playa de El Cabanyal beach in his hometown of Valencia. Both women lean forward slightly so that they appear to move toward the right edge. While the wife stands straight, aligned to the edge, the daughter Maria has slightly turned her head to her right shoulder and is looking towards the viewer.
