Clinton High School (Clinton, South Carolina)
Clinton High School (CHS) is a four-year public high school located in Clinton, South Carolina, United States. It is the lone high school in Laurens County School District 56 and one of two in Laurens County, South Carolina. History Clinton High School was originally housed on Hampton Avenue; it opened in 1917. This school was later replaced by a new building on North Adair Street, which opened in 1956. In late 2008, construction started on a new building on Highway 72 and opened in August 2010. The North Adair Street building was partially remodeled and opened in the fall of 2015 as Clinton Middle School, replacing Bell Street Middle School as District 56's lone middle school. Athletics Clinton High School, nicknamed the Red Devils, is a member of South Carolina's AAA high school classification, competing in Region III. Clinton is a city in Laurens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,490 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville– Mauldin– Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clinton is the home of Presbyterian College. History The Cherokee Indians were Clinton's original inhabitants. The first settler to inhabit the area was John Duncan, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, who arrived in 1752 from Pennsylvania and settled along a creek between the present-day towns of Clinton and Whitmire. Scots-Irish immigrants from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia became the predominant settlers in the area in the two decades before the American Revolutionary War and took active part in a Revolutionary War battle in 1780 at nearby Musgrove Mill. South Carolina Highway 72 (SC 72) is a state highway, traversing interior portions of the South Carolina Piedmont region. This route is part of a multi two-state route 72 that begins at Athens, Georgia and ends at Rock Hill, South Carolina. The route connects many smaller communities outside major metropolitan areas and is roughly parallel with Interstate 85 (I-85) to the north and I-20 and I-77 to the south and east. The route shares the longest concurrency in the state with SC 121, from Whitmire to Rock Hill. Laurens District 55 High School, also referred to as LDHS or simply Laurens High School, is a four-year public high school in Laurens, South Carolina. It is the only high school in Laurens School District 55 and one of two in Laurens County, South Carolina.
