Clifford Rose
John Clifford Rose (24 October 1929 – 6 November 2021) was a British actor. Life and career Rose was born in Herefordshire. He was educated at the King's School, Worcester, and King's College London, before appearing in repertory theatre, rep and began his association with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960. He played the character Sturmbannführer Ludwig Kessler in the BBC World War II television drama ''Secret Army (TV series), Secret Army'' (1977–79) and its sequel ''Kessler (TV series), Kessler'' (1981). He later played SS General Hans Kammler in the miniseries ''War and Remembrance (miniseries), War and Remembrance'' (1988). Rose played leading roles in ''The Pallisers'' (1974), ''Fortunes of War (TV series), Fortunes of War'' (1987) and Alan Bleasdale's drama ''G.B.H. (TV drama), GBH'' (1991), and appeared as Rorvik in the ''Doctor Who'' story ''Warriors' Gate'' (1981). Herefordshire () is a county in the West Midlands of England, governed by Herefordshire Council. It is bordered by Shropshire to the north, Worcestershire to the east, Gloucestershire to the south-east, and the Welsh counties of Monmouthshire and Powys to the west. Donmar Warehouse
The Donmar Warehouse is a 251-seat, not-for-profit theatre in Covent Garden, London, England. It first opened on 18 July 1977. ''The Chalk Garden'' is a play by Enid Bagnold that premiered in the US in 1955 and was produced in Britain the following year. It tells the story of the imperious Mrs St Maugham and her granddaughter Laurel, a disturbed child under the care of Miss Madrigal, a governess, whose past life is a mystery that is solved during the action of the play. The work has been revived numerous times internationally, and was adapted for the cinema in 1964. Background and first productions Bagnold wrote the play with an English premiere in mind, but the West End producer, Binkie Beaumont, turned it down: "I confess I find some of the symbolism confusing and muddling". The piece was taken up by the American producer Irene Selznick, who proposed a Broadway premiere. Enid Algerine Bagnold, Lady Jones, (27 October 1889 – 31 March 1981) was a British writer and playwright known for the 1935 story ''National Velvet''. Early life Enid Algerine Bagnold was born on 27 October 1889 in Rochester, Kent, daughter of Colonel Arthur Henry Bagnold and his wife, Ethel (née Alger), and brought up mostly in Jamaica. Her older brother was Ralph Bagnold. She attended art school in London, and then worked as assistant editor on one of the magazines run by Frank Harris, who became her lover. Harris and Bagnold are both portrayed in Hugh Kingsmill's novel ''The Will to Love'' (1919). Career As an art student in Chelsea, Bagnold painted with Walter Sickert and was sculpted by Gaudier Brzeska.
