Cliff Stroud
Cliff R. Stroud (7 November 1920 – 23 April 2015) was an English international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Stroud started bowling in 1954 for the Trowbridge Westbourne club in Wiltshire (outdoors) and the Christie Miller club (indoors). He was an England international from 1967 to 1972 and won the gold medal in the fours at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship with Peter Line, Ted Hayward and Norman King. World Bowls Championship
The World Bowls Championship is the premier world bowls competition between national bowls organisations. The premier indoor event is the World Indoor Bowls Championships listed separately and is organised by the World Bowls Tour. World Outdoor Championships First held in Australia in 1966, the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women are held every four years. From 2008 the men's and women's events were held together. Qualifying national bowls organisations (usually countries) are represented by a team of five players, who play once as a single and a four, then again as a pair and a triple. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each of the four disciplines, and there is also a trophy for the best overall team — the Leonard Trophy for men and the Taylor Trophy for women. The 1972 Men's World Outdoor Bowls Championship was held at Beach House Park in Worthing, England, from 5 to 17 June 1972. Maldwyn Evans won the singles which was held in a round robin format. The pairs Gold was won by Hong Kong, the triples Gold by the United States and the fours Gold went to England. Scotland lifted the Leonard Trophy with just one point more than South Africa and the United States. Ted Hayward
Edward Henry Hayward (26 September 1924 – 28 October 2022) was an England international lawn bowler. Life and career Hayward was born in London on 26 September 1924. A works foreman by trade, he first played bowls in Hyde Park during 1961 before becoming the Middlesex champion. His brothers Stan and George were both significant bowlers. Originally he bowled for Maida Vale BC before joining Paddington BC in 1966. He made his international debut for England in 1967. Hayward won a gold medal in the fours with Norman King, Cliff Stroud and Peter Line at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing. He competed in the fours event at the Lawn bowls at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games finishing in fifth place. In 1977, he joined Shadwell BC before moving to Century BC in Wembley, where he was working in a carburettor factory in Stanmore. Norman King (7 August 1914 – c. December 1997) was an English international lawn bowler. Bowls career He won a gold medal in the fours with Cliff Stroud, Ted Hayward and Peter Line at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing. 1970 British Commonwealth Games
The 1970 British Commonwealth Games (Scottish Gaelic: Geamannan a 'Cho-fhlaitheis Bhreatainn 1970) were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 16 to 25 July 1970. This was the first time the name British Commonwealth Games was adopted, the first time metric units rather than imperial units were used in all events, and also the first time the games were held in Scotland.
