Cleland, North Lanarkshire
Cleland is a village near Motherwell and Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. As of 2018, it has a population of about 3,000. The village has a strong coal mining heritage, and is a typical example of a working class village in North Lanarkshire and the Glasgow area. Due to its location, despite being at the heart of North Lanarkshire, the village is isolated, geographically and culturally, from surrounding towns such as Motherwell, Shotts and Wishaw. Geography The village is about 30 miles from Edinburgh and 16 miles from Glasgow by train. Geographically, the village of Cleland is roughly bounded by the junction of Cleland Road and Chapleknowe road (B7029) to the west, the junction of Biggar Road and the B7033 Newhouse to the North, the junction of Bellside Road and Carlisle Road ( A73) to the East and the junction of Swinstie road and Wishaw high road to the south. Cleland National Park, formerly Cleland Conservation Park, is a protected area located in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia about south-east of the Adelaide city centre. It conserves a significant area of natural bushland on the Adelaide Hills face, including Mount Lofty Summit and Waterfall Gully. Formerly a conservation park, Cleland was combined with the bordering Eurilla Conservation Park in November 2021 when it was upgraded to the status of national park. The area includes Cleland Wildlife Park, a major tourist attraction, with the draft plan suggesting that the Wildlife Park will be a part of the new Cleland National Park, but this is open to public consultation until late January 2022. The park is classified as an IUCN Category II protected area. Cleland Railway Station
Cleland railway station is a railway station serving the village of Cleland, near Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Built on the Cleland and Midcalder Line it was originally named 'Omoa', after the nearby ironworks, until on the Wishaw and Coltness Railway closed in 1930. It is located on the Shotts Line, east of towards via Shotts. The station has two platforms, connected by a stairway footbridge, and CCTV. It is managed by ScotRail. History In 2019 the footbridge was replaced and lifts installed, allowing step-free access to both platforms. Services It is currently served (Monday to Saturday) by one ScotRail service each hour between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley, plus one return service each day to/from . Its boundaries were created in October 2001, with additional land being added in 2010 from the adjoining suburb of Crafers. Its name is derived from the former Cleland Conservation Park (since November 2021 a national park known as Cleland National Park). The principal land use within the locality is conservation with the majority of its land area being occupied by the Cleland National Park. Places within its extent include the summit of Mount Lofty.
