The following is a list of '' Coronation Street'' characters introduced in 2016, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by series producer Stuart Blackburn, or his successor Kate Oates. Marta Zarek Marta Zarek, played by Edyta Budnik, made her first on-screen appearance on 5 February 2016. The character and casting was announced on 29 January 2016. Marta is introduced as part of a modern slavery storyline. Mark Jefferies of the ''Daily Mirror'' reported that producers consulted experts to ensure the storyline would be accurate. ''Coronation Street'' is an English soap opera created by Granada Television and shown on ITV since 9 December 1960. The programme centres around a cobbled, terraced street in Weatherfield, a fictional town based on inner-city Salford. Bhavna Jayanty Limbachia (born 21 April 1984) is a British actress. She is known for her roles as Alia Khan in ''Citizen Khan'' and Rana Habeeb in ''Coronation Street''. Career Limbachia studied photography, fashion and textiles at college, then moved onto a degree course in Costume Design at Bretton Hall, an affiliate college of the University of Leeds. Before her acting roles, she worked in the costume departments on several film sets including Chicken Tikka Masala in (2005), Bradford Riots in 2006 (costume trainee) and All Day Breakfast in 2008. In 2010 she set up her own business designing and selling vintage clothing and accessories. Shelley King (born 25 September 1955) is a British actress, known for her roles as Jay Harper on the BBC drama series ''Angels'' and Yasmeen Nazir on the ITV soap opera ''Coronation Street''. Early and personal life King was born in Calcutta, India in 1955 to Kelly King, a photographer in India and the UK. Although she is of British and Indian heritage she is unable to speak any of the languages of India. She grew up in New Malden, Surrey, and attended Coombe Girls School.
