Claudio Grech
Claudio Grech (born 2 August 1974) is a Maltese politician with the Nationalist Party. Biography Grech's political career began within the private secretariat of former PN Minister Austin Gatt. He was often referred to as Gatt's right-hand man, and Gatt later testified that Grech was also in charge of his campaign in the run-up to the 2008 general elections, although Grech refuted this claim. Grech was appointed CEO of SmartCity Malta in 2008; he resigned in 2009. He was later appointed Chairman of Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) and resigned in 2011 in the wake of allegations by the Labour opposition that his position granted him access to private citizens' data that was incompatible with his role within the Nationalist Party. These claims led to an investigation by the Data Protection Commissioner, which found that Grech had no access to citizens' personal information. Nationalist Party (Malta)
The Nationalist Party ( mt, Partit Nazzjonalista, PN) is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Malta, along with the Labour Party. It is a Christian-democratic, and conservative political party, and it has been also described as centrist or centre-right on the political spectrum. It is supportive of Malta's membership in the European Union. It is currently in opposition to the Labour Party. Since independence in 1964, the Nationalist Party has won six out of the thirteen general elections, in 1966, 1987, 1992, 1998 and 2003. SmartCity Malta
SmartCity is a technology park under development in Kalkara, Malta. The original plan was to transform the Ricasoli Industrial Estate into an information technology and media city on the models of Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City. The project was unveiled on 10 September 2007 by then Prime Minister of Malta, Lawrence Gonzi. The project was estimated to cost at least €275 million. The whole development, which covers an area of 360,000 square metres, was planned to be fully completed in 2021, although the first offices opened in 2010. 2013 Maltese General Election
General elections were held in Malta on 9 March 2013 to elect all members of the House of Representatives. The Labour Party, led by Joseph Muscat, defeated the governing Nationalist Party, which had been in power since 1998, returning Labour to power after 15 years in opposition. The Nationalists suffered a 6% swing away from them in the popular vote, reaching a 51-year low of 43%. 2011 Maltese Divorce Referendum
A referendum on divorce was held in Malta on 28 May 2011. Voters were asked whether they approved of a new law to introduce allowing divorces, as at that time, Malta was one of only three countries in the world (along with the Philippines and the Vatican City) in which divorce was not permitted. The proposal was approved by 53% of voters, resulting in a law allowing divorce under certain conditions being enacted later in the year.
