Claude Jarman Jr.
Claude Jarman Jr. (born September 27, 1934) is an American former child actor, entrepreneur, former executive director of the San Francisco International Film Festival and former director of Cultural Affairs for the City of San Francisco. Early life and career Jarman was born in Nashville, Tennessee. As a child, he acted in productions of the Nashville Community Playhouse's Children's Theater. Jarman was 10 years old and in the fifth grade in Nashville when he was discovered in a nationwide talent search by MGM Studios, and was cast as the lead actor in the film '' The Yearling'' (1946). His performance received glowing reviews and he received a special Academy Award as outstanding child actor of 1946 as a result. He continued his studies at the MGM studio school, and made a total of 11 films. By the time he reached his early twenties he chose to leave his film career behind. Vanessa Getty (born 1972) is an American socialite and philanthropist. Life and career Getty was born in San Francisco to Claude Jarman Jr., an actor, and Maryann Opperman, a ballerina. She is a graduate of University of California, Los Angeles. In 1999, she married Billy Getty, a son of Gordon Getty and Ann Getty, in the Napa Valley. The couple have three children and are based in San Francisco. In 2015, she was named as an honorary co-chair of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. As a philanthropist, she has contributed in development of the Peninsula Humane Society. Getty is also the founder of San Francisco Bay Humane Friends. Hangman's Knot
The hangman's knot or hangman's noose (also known as a collar during the Elizabethan era) is a knot most often associated with its use in hanging a person. For a hanging, the knot of the rope is typically placed under or just behind the left ear, although the most effective position is just ahead of the ear, beneath the angle of the left lower jaw. The pull on the knot at the end of the drop levers the jaw and head violently up and to the right, which combines with the jerk of the rope becoming taut to wrench the upper neck vertebrae apart. This produces very rapid death, whereas the traditional position beneath the ear was intended to result in the mass of the knot crushing closed (occluding) neck arteries, causing cessation of brain circulation. ''The Sun Comes Up'' is a 1949 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Technicolor picture with Lassie. Jeanette MacDonald had been off the screen for five years until her return in ''Three Daring Daughters'' (1948), but ''The Sun Comes Up'' was to be her last. In it, she had to share the screen not with an up-and-coming younger actress but with a very popular animal star. Although her retreat from a film career can be blamed largely on an increasingly debilitating heart ailment (which eventually took her life at the age of 61 in 1965), MacDonald continued to make concert and TV appearances after this.
