3MP is a commercial radio station, broadcast from Rowville and licensed to Melbourne. Owned and operated by Ace Radio from studios in South Melbourne, it broadcasts an easy listening music format on 1377 AM and DAB+ digital radio. History Early years 3MP commenced transmission on 22 July 1976 from studios in the Bayside Shopping Centre, Frankston. It initially broadcast on 1380 kHz AM from a transmitter located at Rowville and, despite being based outside of the Melbourne city centre, was regarded by many listeners as Melbourne's seventh commercial radio station, the first new commercial licence since the launch of 3XY in 1935. It covers radio broadcasting in the long and medium wave bands outside the Americas ( separate agreements being in place for North and South America). Sherbet (band)
Sherbet (aka Highway or The Sherbs) was one of the most successful Australian rock bands of the 1970s. The 'classic line-up' of Daryl Braithwaite on vocals, Tony Mitchell (musician), Tony Mitchell on bass guitar, Garth Porter on keyboards, Alan Sandow on drums, and Clive Shakespeare on guitar provided their teen-oriented pop style. In 1976 Shakespeare left and was soon replaced by Harvey James. Sherbet's biggest singles were "Summer Love (Sherbet song), Summer Love" (1975) and "Howzat" (1976), both reaching Chart-topper, number one in Australia. "Howzat" was also a top 5 hit in the United Kingdom. The band was less successful in the United States, where "Howzat" peaked at No. 61. "Howzat" is a song by Australian band Sherbet, released in May 1976. The song reached number 1 in Australia on the Kent Music Report and it also reached number 1 in New Zealand on the Recorded Music NZ. It was released from Sherbet's album of the same name, '' Howzat''. The song was written by band members Garth Porter and Tony Mitchell. Brian Frederick Bury (born 14 June 1937) is an Australian former radio and television personality and weather presenter, best known for his tenure on the Nine Network's breakfast show ''Today'' as weathermen from the program's inception in 1982 until 1990.
