Clarksdale Moan
"Clarksdale Moan" is a blues song recorded by the Delta blues musician Son House and first released as a Gramophone record, 78-RPM single in 1930. The equally sought-after recording "Mississippi County Farm Blues" was the A-side and B-side, A-side. The song remained unheard until 2005, when an anonymous record collector discovered an original 78-RPM disc in decent condition. It was released in 2006 on the Yazoo Records album ''The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of (album), The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of'', which contained many other rare blues recordings from that era. Background Son House recorded nine songs for Paramount Records in Grafton, Wisconsin, in 1930, released as 78-RPM records. Seven of these recordings were rediscovered (see below), but the "Clarksdale Moan" 78 continued to elude collectors and was dubbed the "Record collecting#Most valuable records, holy grail" of lost blues recordings. Edward James "Son" House Jr. (March 21, 1902His date of birth is a matter of some debate. House alleged that he was middle-aged during World War I and that he was 79 in 1965, which would make his date of birth around 1886. However, all legal records give his date of birth as March 21, 1902. – October 19, 1988) was an American Delta blues singer and guitarist, noted for his highly emotional style of singing and slide guitar playing. Yazoo Records is an American record label founded in the mid-1960s by Nick Perls. It specializes in early American blues, country, jazz, and other rural American genres collectively known as roots music. History The first five releases (L 1001 to L 1005) were issued under the label name of Belzona Records. The label was then renamed Yazoo Records, and the first five releases were reissued under the new name. The Belzona and Yazoo labels featured an Art Deco drawing of a peacock, adapted from the 1927 label of Black Patti Records. JSP Records is a British record label, founded in 1978 by John Stedman (John Stedman Promotions), releasing recordings by blues musicians such as Professor Longhair, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Witherspoon, Louisiana Red, Deitra Farr, Charlie Sayles, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Kansas City Red, Eddie Taylor, and Big John Wrencher. The label is based in London, England. JSP now predominantly releases remastered CDs of public domain jazz and blues recordings. ''The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of'' is a two-CD album of blues, country, and old-time music recordings that were originally released in the 1920s and 1930s on 78 rpm records. Subtitled ''The Dead Sea Scrolls of Record Collecting'', it is a compilation of songs from rare and hard-to-find records. It was released in 2006. The cover of ''The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of'' is the size and shape of a DVD box. The cover art is by Robert Crumb, a noted cartoonist and an avid collector of vintage 78 rpm records. The album also includes a 20-page illustrated booklet. According to the liner notes, the album was remastered using only a moderate level of noise reduction, with the goal of preserving as much as possible of the character and dynamic range of the original recordings. A-side And B-side
The A-side and B-side are the two sides of phonograph records and cassettes; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay and hopefully become a hit record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as, or more so than, their A-sides. Grafton, Wisconsin
Grafton is a village in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. Located about north of Milwaukee and in close proximity to Interstate 43, it is a suburban community in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The village incorporated in 1896, and at the time of the 2010 census the population was 11,459. Like many of Ozaukee County's cities and villages, the Village of Grafton has rural roots and began as a mill town. The German and Irish immigrants who settled in Grafton in the 1840s utilized the Milwaukee River as a source of hydropower for gristmills and woolen mills. Gramophone Record
A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. At first, the discs were commonly made from shellac, with earlier records having a fine abrasive filler mixed in. Starting in the 1940s polyvinyl chloride became common, hence the name vinyl. The phonograph record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. It had co-existed with the phonograph cylinder from the late 1880s and had effectively superseded it by around 1912. Pony Blues
"Pony Blues" is a Delta blues song recorded by blues musician Charley Patton. Patton recorded the song in June 1929 during his first session. The song was also the first song to be released by Patton on the Paramount label. Recording and background Patton wrote "Pony Blues" sometime around the age 19, and is one of the first songs Patton ever wrote. He would record another rendition of this song as "Stone Pony Blues" in 1934. With the help of record store owner H. C. Speir, Patton obtained his first recording session, for Paramount Records, on June 14, 1929. He cut 14 sides, including "Pony Blues" (vocal and guitar). Patton's composition "Down the Dirt Road" was also recorded at this session.
